DAILY CLEAN-UP ASSIGNMENTS: Shop, F112 Classroom

OBJECTIVE: Students will master the general safety practices associated with use of the shop, as well as specific practices associated with the band saws, scroll saws, floor sanders, and drill presses.
REMINDER: The class contract was due on Monday. Please turn a picture of your signed contract into Canvas ASAP. Starting next week, students without a contract will not be permitted to work in the shop.
Students were asked to obtain their second Bee Box, look at the score, and then asked to take them home if they do not want to keep them.
Students obtained a piece of wood for the First Cuts Project.
Before starting on the First Cuts Project, students were shown the stationary sanders. Then, students were allowed to work on the First Cuts Project. Students who had already completed this assignment for another class were given the task of helping other students. To complete the steps for the drill presses, students were assisted by an adult.
Time permitting, students began the safety testing for these pieces of equipment.

Complete the Band Saw Safety Test, and do test corrections as necessary. (DUE 9/25) If absent today, first watch the Band Saw Safety Video on the CV Safety Website, before taking the test.
Complete the Scroll Saw Safety Test, and do test corrections as necessary. (DUE 9/25) If absent today, first watch the Scroll Saw Safety video on the CV Safety Website, before taking the test.
Complete the Stationary Sander Safety Test, and do test corrections as necessary. (DUE 9/25) If absent today, first watch the Scroll Saw Safety video on the CV Safety Website, before taking the test.
Complete the Drill Press Safety Test, and do test corrections as necessary. (DUE 9/25) If absent today, first watch the Scroll Saw Safety video on the CV Safety Website, before taking the test.

Group 2 went with Mr. K to the shop and discussed the safe operation of the band saws and the scroll saws.
Group 1 stayed in the classroom with Mr. Bregar.

Students were divided into two groups. Group 1 went with Mr. K to the shop and discussed the safe operation of the band saws and the scroll saws. After the safety demonstrations, students were allowed to start the First Cuts Project.
Group 2 stayed in the classroom with Mr. Bregar.

OBJECTIVE: Students will get comfortable about making a quality product in the shop.
Students were given the period to finish their second Bee Box. Students finishing early were asked to start a third one that would go to the City of Corvallis for use by the Parks & Rec Department.

Read (and have your parents read) this Class Syllabus. Print the last page which is a class contract. Sign this contract as required. Take a picture of this contract. Submit this picture on Canvas. If you do not have a printer, you may place signatures on a blank piece of paper and indicate that you have read and agree to the class contract, take a picture of this, and submit this to Canvas. OBJECTIVE: Students will get comfortable about making a quality product in the shop.
Students were given the period to continue to work on their second Bee Box.

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to access the class website, the Canvas class, complete the initial class survey, and access the class syllabus and contract.
Students were shown how they could use screws (with the use of pilot holes) when making their second bee box. These, in combination with nails, might be a better way to keep the boxes together.
Students were reminded about our conversation from last period and encouraged to:
- Read instructions and get steps checked off (this will be part of the grade).
- Slow down.
- Clamp things down before connecting.
- Pay attention to dimensions (5.5" x 6" -- they are close, but not the same and make a big difference when you attach pieces together.
- If using screws -- use pilot holes too (use a 1/8" bit).
Students were assigned new partners and tasked with building a second, better, bee box.

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to access the class website, the Canvas class, complete the initial class survey, and access the class syllabus and contract.
Students were given some time to finish their bee boxes.
The build process was de-briefed. Students were asked to critique quality in the context of making something worth of selling. Other topics disussed:
- The value of following instructions (Did you get your POP checked as you went?, Did you read the instructions?)
- The value of slowing down and thinking about your process.
- The value of conserving materials (because they cost money -- the more you use, the less money you might make).
- The value of skillbuilding. While sales might be one goal, in this class we will always be seeking to expand everyone's skills. What can you do to help build yours, and the skills of others?
- The use of a rubric to guide quality.

The emphasis for the first half of the class will be to simply learn how to make things of a quality in which they could be sold. So we are going to jump into our first project today and will be making Mason Bee Boxes.
