OBJECTIVE:  Students will learn how to use Illustrator and how to utilize the laser engravers, UV printer, and Shaper Origins when making things.

OBJECTIVE:  Students will create a PDF file from Illustrator that is ready for UV printing.

Today's focus we be getting a file ready to print on the UV printer.

A former student will be speaking with the class next week.  Students were asked to prepare some questions for him that they wish to ask.

Mr. K showed students a few more tools in Illustrator:

1. The Shape tool

2. The Pen Tool.

3. The Pathfinder Tool.

4. Gridlines and rulers.

5. How to make a background.

6. When the white and gloss layers can be other than the design itself.

Following this, students created a UV version of their laser engraved file -- one in which the entire tile is utilized, and the requred word are easily visible.  STUDENTS -- USE YOUR MAGENTIC SIGN POP TO GUIDE YOUR WORK.

The first phone holder is due 10/21 by the end of the period.

Students were allowed to work on any of the following:

1. Their phone holder in the shop.

2. Laser engraving their first sign tile.

3. Working on their UV print tile.

To spread people out and avoid as many bottlenecks as possible, students did the following:

• If students are ready to laser engrave their tile, they placed their name on the laser engraver queue.  Over the course of the next several days, students on the queue will be shown how to use the laser engraver.

• Once a student's name is on the queue, they should be working on their first phone holder.

• Students who have already laser engraved, are to return to the shop and complete their trial phone holders.  Students will be making another one that can encorporate laser engraving and UV printing in a couple of days.

Students continued to receive instruction on utilizing Adobe Illustrator.  The POP for the Personal Magnetic Sign was the roadmap of what was covered.

This week will be focused on teaching students Adobe Illustrator software so that students can utilize the school's laser engravers, UV printer, and Shaper Origin CNC routers in their projects.

Students were walked through the POP for the Personal Magnetic Sign.

You are not required to download Adobe Illustrator at home.  You can always request access to the school's computers outside of normal class times as needed.  That said, many students enjoy having the flexibility to use this program at home.  Below are instructions for downloading Illustrator onto a computer at home:

OBJECTIVE:  Students will master the general safety practices associated with use of the shop, as well as specific practices associated with the band saws, scroll saws, floor sanders, and drill presses.

OBJECTIVE:  Students will become proficient with the use of both the shop tools and the fab lab equipment by making marketable items and products.

Students finished completing the four safety tests on Canvas (and test corrections as necessary) if they were not completed up to this point.

Mr. Bregar discussed his example of creating a back for a phone holder.  Then students continued work on their phone holders.  Students are to use plywood initially to make their first phone holder back.  These test backs are due on Friday.

OBJECTIVE:  Students will master the general safety practices associated with use of the shop, as well as specific practices associated with the band saws, scroll saws, floor sanders, and drill presses.

REMINDER:  The class contract was due on Monday.  Please turn a picture of your signed contract into Canvas ASAP.  Starting next week, students without a contract will not be permitted to work in the shop.

Mr. K briefly discussed the drill presses with the class out in the shop.  This was necessary so that students can complete the safety test for the drill press.

Students were asked to complete the four safety tests on Canvas, and then complete test corrections for any question they get wrong on the tests.

• TEST CORRECTIONS must be done immediately after taking a test if you want full credit for them.  Test corrections must be done before a student is approved to use the piece of equipment in question, however corrections do not replace the test score.  They have a score themselves.  Students getting 100% on a safety test will receive full points for their test correction score for that test.  For full credit, they must meet the following criteria ON THE FIRST SUBMITTAL:

  • Student's name

  • Name of the test

  • The number(#) of the problem on the test that was (were) missed.

  • A correct, stand-alone statement that correctly communicates all of the information from the problem.

  • It is legible; exceedingly poor handwriting will be returned to you.

  • It is completed on a FULL sheet of paper -- no partial sheets.

Students finishing with all tests and corrections were allowed to start work on the next project.

OBJECTIVE:  Students will master the general safety practices associated with use of the shop, as well as specific practices associated with the band saws, scroll saws, floor sanders, and drill presses.

Group 2 went with Mr. K to the shop and discussed the safe operation of the band saws and the scroll saws.

Group 1 stayed in the classroom with Mr. Bregar.

OBJECTIVE:  Students will get comfortable about making a quality product in the shop.

Students were given the period to finish their second Bee Box.  Students finishing early were asked to start a third one that would go to the City of Corvallis for use by the Parks & Rec Department.

OBJECTIVE:  Students will be able to access the class website, the Canvas class, complete the initial class survey, and access the class syllabus and contract.

Students were shown how they could use screws (with the use of pilot holes) when making their second bee box.  These, in combination with nails, might be a better way to keep the boxes together.

Students were reminded about our conversation from last period and encouraged to:

• Read instructions and get steps checked off (this will be part of the grade).

• Slow down.

• Clamp things down before connecting.

• Pay attention to dimensions (5.5" x 6" -- they are close, but not the same and make a big difference when you attach pieces together.

• If using screws -- use pilot holes too (use a 1/8" bit).

Students were assigned new partners and tasked with building a second, better, bee box.   

OBJECTIVE:  Students will be able to access the class website, the Canvas class, complete the initial class survey, and access the class syllabus and contract.

The emphasis for the first half of the class will be to simply learn how to make things of a quality in which they could be sold.  So we are going to jump into our first project today and will be making Mason Bee Boxes.
