College Now

The college now credit for this class is associated with producing proper engineering drawings, created using appropriate engineering standards. To earn College Now credit in this course, you must demonstrate proficiency at CAD drafting. As you know this year we are using SolidWorks for a variety of things. Students wishing to earn four LBCC credits for EG 4.4.07: Introduction to CAD, can complete the normal assignments for the class, with the addition of only a couple of extra assignments. These "extra" assignments will usually be similar to those completed by everyone else but may require the incorporation of one or two extra drawing elements and/or adherence to additional drawing standards. Successful completion of the normal assignments, as well as passing a final proficiency test, will allow a student to earn these CN credits.

LBCC Learning Outcomes state that students earning credit for EG4.407 will be able to :

Use CAD software to create technical drawings.
Dimension drawings to local standards.
Correctly layout drawings.
Create orthographic projections.
Create auxiliary views.

The requirements and all materials necessary to earn these credits will be posted on this page and updated as the class continues. At times, a student's attendance at A/O or during lunch may be mandatory. As always, students are welcome to come see the instructors whenever assistance is required.

SHOULD YOU SIGN UP FOR COLLEGE NOW CREDIT?

REASONS FOR SIGNING UP:

You will receive college credit at no cost (and will pay a good bit if you take these same classes at a college later).
Once signed up, you are good for any CN class you take at CV during any of your four years here. The credits can add up!
These credits are good at all schools in the Oregon Univeristy System. Many colleges and universities beyond Oregon accept credits from LBCC as well. The CN program is not just for students intending to go to LBCC!
If you are intending to go to LBCC -- you definitely want to sign up -- there are few reasons not to.
Some CV students earn enough CN credits to be sophomores after their first college term. Being classified as an upperclassman often allows you to register before your peers at college after CV (and this applies to most colleges, not just colleges in Oregon).
You aren't sure what you want to do after CV.

REASONS FOR NOT SIGNING UP:

There is the possibility, if you accumulate too many college credits THAT DO NOT END UP COUNTING TOWARD YOUR FIRST DEGREE , that you will run out of financial aid funding before you eventually earn your first college degree. Students are eligible for financial aid for up to 150% of the credits needed for their FIRST degree. Should a student change majors while at college, it is possible that a student might complete so many college credits (including CN credits earned at CV) that they will run out of financial aid eligibility before earning their first degree. This will not likely be an issue for the student who sticks with a major once at college and actually earns their first degree. To summarize then -- if the credit for this class cannot be applied to a degree you eventually earn, receiving this CN credit really does nothing for you except get you closer to the financial aid cut-off. Unfortunately, few people can really know for certain what credit they will actually end up needing in the future.
The specific credit you can earn in this class -- EG 4.4.07 Introduction to CAD -- is credit that can be applied towards an LBCC 2-year associate degree. Such credit would not generally transfer to a 4-year program at another school. So if you know for sure you will be pursuing a 4-year degree, then you probably shouldn't sign up. Again though, the biggest problem here is knowing now, so early into it, what exactly it is that you will want to do. While this credit won't transfer to a four-year degree, many of the other CN credits available at CV can be applied to 4-year degrees elsewhere. It all depends upon the specific LBCC class being articulated with CV.
If you are already planning to take EG 4.4.07 Introduction to CAD at LBCC, you won't gain anything with the CN credit.

TO SIGN UP FOR COLLEGE NOW:

Typically, we wait and sign students up for College Now after the beginning of 2ND SEMESTER. Until then, to remain eligible for CN credit for the class, students must earn at least a B for their first semester final grade.
All students are eligible.
A student must let Mr. K know that he/she is interested in pursuing College Now Credit by attending a mandatory meeting during lunch ON A DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED 2ND SEMESTER (see the main class webpage under the calendar). If a student cannot attend this meeting, the student must notify Mr. K prior to the meeting to make other arrangements.
In order to sign up for College Now, students/parents must complete the online application on LBCC's Main College Now Page. Paper applications are also available at CVHS's Career Center. Please note -- YOU ONLY HAVE TO SUBMIT THIS APPLICATION ONCE DURING YOUR 4-YEAR EXPERIENCE AT CV.
Once you are signed up with LBCC, you are able to sign up for any college now credit offered in any of your CV courses by making sure your name is on your CV instructor's roster. YOU DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE CN CREDIT BY SIGNING UP WITH LBCC -- YOU ALSO MUST MAKE SURE MR. K HAS YOUR NAME ON HIS CN ROSTER. This roster will be made available during the lunch meeting 2ND SEMESTER MENTIONED ABOVE.
The student name Mr. K places on his CN class roster MUST match the name the student places on the application form.
Once the registration form is completed, LBCC assigns a CN account number for the student, and sends CVHS a list of all CV CN students with their LBCC ID numbers.
After the class roster is sent to LBCC by the CV instructor, an entry will be made to the student's LBCC transcript that indicates CN credits are pending for this class. (Parents frequently call asking why some of their student's CN classes show as pending while others don't appear at all).
Students can verify their CN credits through Webrunner (LBCC's student information system) on LBCC's website. Students get their login information through email when they sign up for College Now.
LBCC posts the grades and credits to the student's LBCC transcript after final grades are received by LBCC from the CV instructor (this will not occur until after the last day of school in June).
It is the student's responsibility to eventually check his/her LBCC transcript on-line (through the Student Information System -- SIS/Webrunner) to verify that CN credits have been properly posted to their LBCC transcript. It's best to check the transcripts after the end of each semester, allowing 2-3 weeks for LBCC to get the credit/grade posted.
LBCC will not retroactively update transcripts with CN credits if more than a year has passed since the course was taken at CV or once a student has graduated. Also, LBCC will not grade retroactively once grades are submitted unless it was the College Now teacher's error, or Linn-Benton's error.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA / REQUIRED STANDARDS

To earn an A for the LBCC credit, you must:

earn at least an 80% on each CN-specific assignment
earn an average of at least 90% on all CN-specific assignments
earn at least 90% on the final Proficiency Test
earn an A in the class here at CV for 2nd semester (the semester in which drawings will be produced).

To earn a B for the LBCC credit, you must:

earn at least an 80% on each CN-specific assignment
earn an average of at least 80% on all CN-specific assignments
earn at least 80% on the final Proficiency Test
earn an A or a B in the class here at CV 2nd Semester

Drawing Standards (1/30/19). This document lists all of the drawing standards that must be used whenever producing a drawing using Solidworks. These standards will be explained during the course as necessary. It is suggested that any student pursuing CN credit try and comply with all of these standards for ALL the drawings you complete for this class for the duration of the year. Practice makes perfect!

REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS TO BE COMPLETED:

CN Assignment 1: Students are to submit the Riser, Step Block, Wedge Block, and Linkage drawings, meeting all drawing standards above for their drawings. (DUE On Calendar of Class Web Site.)

CN Assignment 2: Windmill / CNC Solidworks Drawing (DUE 4/12)

CN Assignment 3: Final Project Drawing . This drawing must comply with all of the drawing standards listed on the document linked above on this page. Make sure your dimensions are placed appropriately. (DUE 6/17)

CN Final Proficiency Test (to be given on 6/13). Sometime between 6/3 and 6/13, students are to come in and look at the block of wood that they will prepare a drawing for during the final test. Students will be allowed to measure all dimensions for this block and write them down on their own paper. Students may even sketch (by hand) the three views of this block and fully dimension it ahead of time. However, students may not model this block in Solidworks prior to the test (Mr. K will collect the student's note sheet with the measured dimensions until the day of the test). On Thursday, June 13th, students will be given the entire period (if needed) to model and produce a proper scaled drawing on 11 x 8.5 paper. The drawing produced must meet all of the Drawing Standards listed above. There will be no redo's for this test.
