Students who were in class took the Pre-Engineering TSA.
From this point on in the semester, the daily journal will consist of a daily check-in. Students will be given their printed timelines back. Students will review their timelines, modify them as needed, and then take it to an instructor who will initial it after checking progress and changes. If changes are extensive, students may be asked to revise and print a new copy. The instructors will keep these hard copy timelines -- they should always be returned to an instructor.

OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their next project.
Students were asked to come up with a design that fits within a scrap piece of metal acquired from the metals area (find a piece of metal before beginning on your design to ensure you are minimizing waste). This design will be engraved and cut from carbon steel plate using the school's ArcLight CNC Plasma Table. Designs should be sketched using either Solidworks or Illustrator.
There are two documents you must follow to complete this assignment, and both are posted on the CV Safety Page for the CNC Plasma Table. First, read and document entitled Preparing G-Code Using Sheetcam for instructions when preparing the G-Code to run the table. Next, after you have produced the G-Code, use the document entitled Using the ArcLight CNC Plasma Table when out at the machine cutting your part. One of your instructors will likely be out there with you. Once the part is cut, a wire wheel can be used to clean up the part and remove slag.
The CNC Plasma Art Part will be due by 6/14/19, and should be worked on whenever students come to a standstill while working on other projects.

OBJECTIVE: Students will understand the importance of always maintaining a focus upon the customer.

Students were asked to look at the comments the instructors have placed on their Next Project Proposal Assignment (even though they are marked as Mr. K's, both instructors authored all comments). Before proceeding with their projects, students are to revise their plans to reflect the instructor suggestions, and re-do the Next Project Proposal Assignment so that the following criteria are met:

Students must talk to and receive feedback from their customers and key stakeholders so that the project design and scope can be identified, a detailed drawing can be made, and a valid BOM can be created, complete with a projected project cost.
The customer must approve the scope / drawing / design. The drawing should be completed in Solidworks, and should be created so that it is properly dimensioned, annotated, and meets the drawing standards that are posted on the Resource Page of this class website. In most cases, this will be an assembly drawing of multiple parts put together in Solidworks. Don't know how to do an assembly drawing? Necessity is always the best teacher, and your instructors will help and show you. For some projects, an illustrator file might be required. ALL STUDENTS MUST CREATE A SOLIDWORKS FILE (or something that is equivalent -- which must be approved by an instructor).
Once the scope / drawing / design has been approved by the customer, students are to re-do and resubmit the Next Project Proposal Assignment.
By the end of the class period, groups must present an acceptable and realistic due date for their Next Project Proposal Assignment, along with a justification for their new due date. This due date should allow time for multiple customer-student interactions and the creation of your design drawings and BOM. An instructor must approve this due date. The due date will be placed in the comment section of Pinnacle.

When installing new sign holders, signs should be placed in the same position relative to the floor and door as other signs. When multiple signs for multiple rooms can be seen at once, all signs should be installed at the same height, in the same general location relative to the doors.

Students were shown the shop clean-up assignments. These are posted out in the shop, and will be posted here initially so that you can easily find the list of required tasks. Student assignments will be rotated throughout the year. 5th Period DREAM Shop Clean-Up Assignments. Each day, when clean-up is called, students should do the following in this order:

Clean up their materials at the work benches, putting away all their tools and returning their projects to the class cabinet. Return the Chromebook you are using to the Chromebook cart.
Proceed to your assigned area of the shop and work until ALL tasks for your area are completed.
When finished with your area, assist with other areas of the shop if needed.

Students will be given a point each day for clean-up. When students are observed not doing their fair share on a given day, perhaps taking for instance as opposed to cleaning, they will not earn the point for that day. In truth, these should be easy points to earn.

OBJECTIVE: Students will master the safety practices of the table saws, the chop saw, the jointer, the CNC routers, and the planer, and know how to utilize this equipment by completing three light shard bases and completing staff signs.
Students were informed of the calendar links that have been placed on the Resources Page. These are to be used to sign up for times to use either of the two Forest Scientific CNC Routers or the Laser Engraver outside of the normal class period. During the class period, existing paper queue's will be used to determine the order of students using the equipment.
If signing up for times outside the school day -- check with an instructor first! They may not be available.
If coming in outside of class, you are responsible for cleaning everything up.
Students are cautioned to be efficient. Some work may need to be done outside of class, especially for the Forest Scientific machines and the laser engraver -- the primary bottlenecks. IF YOU COME IN OUTSIDE OF CLASS, BE PREPARED TO BE SELF SUFFICIENT. Your instructors may be able to answer one or two questions, but they will not be able to work with you continuously. If you haven't already, be sure to watch others use the equipment in class before you come in outside of class.
Students were cautioned to prioritize work on things that can only be done here at school, especially for the sign holders.

MONDAY, 10/1/18

OBJECTIVE: Students will master the safety practices of the table saws, the chop saw, the jointer, and the planer, and know how to utilize this equipment in preparing material for projects.
OBJECTIVE: Students will begin work on the teacher sign project.
Starting today, students are to complete a Daily Journal entry at the beginning of every class. This will be both a planning tool and documentation tool for students, as well as a means for the instructors to track the work that students do on various projects throughout the year. When they arrive to class, students are to log into Google Classroom and complete the journal assignment that is there for the day. Students should respond to the prompts, answering with complete, thoughtful sentences that are free from spelling and other grammatical errors. Journals will be selected at random for grading throughout the year.
Absent students should still complete the daily journal. It can be done at home.
Students were allowed to complete today's journal entry.
Students were introduced to the staff sign project -- the other project in addition to the light shard base activity, that students will complete before starting new projects.
Student Staff Sign Assignments. By 10/5, students are to contact their assigned staff member(s) and identify what work is needed for their sign (some just need a new insert engraved, some will need a sign holder, some will need the sign to be relocated, etc....).
Staff Sign Construction Drawing. This has all dimensions and steps that are needed to make the sign and its holder.
Staff Sign Illustrator Template file (modify this file when changes are needed so that fonts and sizes are consistent). If you need to modify someone's sign, ask Mr. K for the original Illustrator file. All files that are altered must be sent back to Mr. K for archival.
Staff Sign Cavity NC file (for the Forest Scientific CNC routers).
Light Shard Cavity NC file (for the Forest Scientific CNC routers).
Light Shard Slit NCD file (for the Davinci CNC routers).
Students then went to the shop and were allowed to process some wood on the table saws prior to taking the table saw safety test. Where possible, students worked on either the teacher signs or their light shard bases.

CV Main Sign Lighting -- Slide Presentation. Each group should prepare three slides. One slide describing your planned lighting scheme. A second slide showing your lighting product and the pros and cons. A third slide showing your charge controller alone with its pros and cons. These will be presented on Tuesday. (DUE 9/25)

Background to the main CV sign lighting was presented to the entire class.
Students completed the general shop safety test online.
Demonstrations were started for the Chop Saw. When finished, students selected a piece of wood long enough to make three light shard bases. This was cut to rough total length using the chop saw.
Light Shard Bases should be sized to 3"x6"x.75". Each student will make three bases.
Students completed cutting their test wood on the chop saw as needed. While students worked through the chop saw queue, students were to research ideas regarding the main sign LED lights.

FRIDAY, 9/7/18

OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to upload a file to Google Classroom.
OBJECTIVE: Students will master the safety practices associated with general shop tools.
Class expectations and rules were discussed as necessary.
Safety glasses were distributed as needed.
Safety demonstrations were carried out on the band saws, the drill presses, the scroll saws, and the floor sanders. Students utilized shop equipment in order to re-familiarize themselves with the equipment.

WEDNESDAY, 9/5/18

Students were given a brief introduction to the class.
Students with safety glasses from previous classes or at home were asked to bring them with them next period.
Students then logged into one of the new Chromebook laptops and followed these Setting Up Computer and Device Access Instructions to create an account upon the chromebook and sign up for Google Classroom.
Usually in this class, students are asked to do a smaller project(s) to get acclimated again with all of the various equipment and tools utilized in the class. These projects were briefly discussed:

Light shard bases for STEAM (all students will make two. This will require the use of both the Techno Davinci and the Forest Scientific CNC's).

A couple of other projects that we hope to complete this year:

Complete the electrical on the school's main sign.
Design, construct, and utilize a powder coating booth here at CV.
Re-purpose the old school sign as a bench, table, or something else on campus.
