• This is the last day to work in the shop. All projects, regardless of their status, must be submitted, with the paper work, by the end of the period.
• The first thing students need to do today is go to the cabinet and remove anything they want to keep. Mr. K will be cleaning the cabinet out as you work.
• Students were also warned to pick-up and put away all materials from previous or current projects that are within the classroom or shop today. After today, if materials that Mr. K knows are yours are still left out, there will be reductions of your clean-up score.

Mr. K would like all projects submitted on 4/23 so that he has time to package, make cards for, and then transport the projects.

• Each student's 2nd Semester Personal Project #1 POP is due on Thursday, 3/7. Students must use the POP Template, and complete all parts, following all instructions. Drawings should be digitized (photographed or scanned) and inserted into the Google Doc of the POP template. You will need to make a copy of this template first, before you will be able to modify it.
• Use this POP Scoring Rubric to know what to expect when your POP is graded.

This project will be entered in the Mid Willamette Valley Woodworker's Guild Show at the Corvallis Public Library between 4/24 and 4/27. Start thinking about project ideas now. If you have an idea but are unsure how to proceed, come ask Mr. K and he might be able to find you some plans.

MONDAY, 2/11/19

• OBJECTIVE: Students will prepare a POP for the Standing Frame Project.
• OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to use the Tormek T-8 sharpener to sharpen chisels and plane blades.
• There was no Daily Journal. Instead, students completed the Tormek Sharpening quiz. Students can utilize one page of hand-written notes for the quiz. Nothing can be photocopied on this page.
• ANNOUNCEMENT: New clean-up assignments were shared with students. All students have a specific assignment and will be graded accordingly each day. Two students in each class have not been given assignments and will fill in for other students who are absent on a given day.
• 8th Period Shop Clean-Up Assignments
• Students failing to have submitted a POP by today, were given a POP created by Mr. K for the Standing Frame. As usual, students have one week to submit their own POP to Google Classroom for 30% credit.

TUESDAY, 2/5/19

• OBJECTIVE: Students will prepare a POP for the Standing Frame Project.
• OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to use the Tormek T-8 sharpener to sharpen chisels and plane blades.
• There was no Daily Journal.
• Students were reminded that they have until 2/15 to resubmit their last project in for re-grading. Most of the grading for these projects was done quickly based on how much of the project was complete. More complete grading will occur when the project is re-submitted. Work on these projects should be planned for outside of class (consult Mr. K if this is a problem so that he can help you problem-solve).
• For this semester, students will complete a required standing frame for their first 100 points, and then will be responsible for coming up with at least 200 more points of advanced woodworking quality projects by the end of the semester. This might come in the form of one or two projects. We will not be doing any project less than 100 points.
• Students will also be required to submit a project they complete this year to the Mid-Willamette Valley Woodworkers Guild Show at the Corvallis Public Library in mid-April.
• Mr. K showed students how to use the Tormek T-8 system to sharpen chisels and plane blades. Students will be given a quiz on this system on 1/11 so students were encouraged to pay attention, ask questions, and take notes. Students will be allowed to use one page of hand-written notes during the quiz. The manual and additional information for the Tormek T-8 is located on the safety page (under the "Maintenance Equipment and Tools" subpage / heading). Look specifically at the SE-77 Square Edge Jig Instructions posted there -- this document, and Mr. K's presentation, will be the focus of the quiz. The Intro Video on the safety page is also a great review for the quiz.
• Steps for Sharpening Hand Plane Blades and Chisels. These were discussed now that students had been shown the Tormek System.
• Students are to used this Standing Frame Project article to help generate a POP for the first project. This article is password protected with the same password you were previously given in class. Students are to use this POP Template when generating your POP. You will need to make a copy of this and then add it to your drive. You will not have edit rights to this file. This POP is to be completed by Thursday, 2/7. All parts of this template should be completed with the exception of the drawing (the drawing is already in the article). When finished, students should turn it into Google Classroom.

• Students are to submit something for the school's talent show by no later than the last day of class this semester. There are two parts to completing this assignment: 1) turning the project in, and 2) filling out this Talent Show Submittal Form.

TUESDAY, 1/8/19

• OBJECTIVE: Students will work on their mallet project or their 3rd Project.
• OBJECTIVE: Students will plan out their remaining days for this semester.
• Students completed their daily journals. There are only eight class periods remaining in this semester, and only seven of those will be work days to get projects done. The journals today are intended to help students map out a path for getting their projects (the angled box, mallet, and their 3rd project) done. Journal tasks should reference POP steps when possible. Milestones and things to be completed by the end of each day must be concrete and specific. These journals were printed and taped to the whiteboard. Each day, at the end of each class period, students will go to their timeline on this journal print-out and verify they are still on track for completing their projects. If they are not, students will place a post-it note with an unhappy face on it on their timeline. Students will also indicate on their timeline what they will do to catch back up.

As part of this journal, students competed a hardcopy of the missing line drawing that was completed in the last journal and were asked to correct #1 and #6 on this drawing, as well as complete #2 and #3. These last two had to be checked by Mr. K before students were allowed to go to work in the shop.

• Students who have not submitted either the Card Scraper Proficiency Test Write-Up or the Plane and Chisel Proficiency Write-Up will be required to work on these in class until they are completed to Mr. K's satisfaction. They will be too late for points at this point, but students need to be able to use card scrapers, planes, and chisels.
• Students are to have a completed POP for their third project submitted by the BEGINNING of class on next Tuesday, Dec. 4th. Students should use the online template to complete this POP. The POP must have a scaled drawing with aligned views, and the POP should be printed so that teacher initials can be obtained during the project build.

• Students were shown the shop clean-up assignments. These are posted out in the shop, and will be posted here initially so that you can easily find the list of required tasks. Student assignments will be rotated throughout the year. 8th Period Adv. Woods Shop Clean-Up Assignments. Each day, when clean-up is called, students should do the following in this order:

1. Clean up their materials at the work benches, putting away all their tools and returning their projects to the class cabinet. Return the Chromebook you are using to the Chromebook cart.
2. Proceed to your assigned area of the shop and work until ALL tasks for your area are completed.
3. When finished with your area, assist with other areas of the shop if needed.

• Students will be given a point each day for clean-up. When students are observed not doing their fair share on a given day, perhaps taking for instance as opposed to cleaning, they will not earn the point for that day. In truth, these should be easy points to earn.

• Chisel and hand plane sharpening was demonstrated. Demonstrations were performed using both a sharp chisel as well as a sharp plane. Before students are allowed to use the chisels and hand planes, they must complete this Hand Plane & Chisel Proficiency Checklist.

• OBJECTIVE: Students will get reacquainted with all the shop tools and the use of a POP and technical drawing.
• Students were asked to complete a daily journal. This will be required EVERY day from now on, and should be completed at the very beginning of class (unless the instructor says otherwise). They will be checked periodically and graded for completeness and thoughtfulness.
• The new Project Grade Sheet was reviewed so students have an understanding of what types of things they will be assessed on for projects completed in this class.

TUESDAY, 9/18/18

• OBJECTIVE: Students will review the safety procedures for the chop saw, jointer, planer, and table saw.
• Demonstrations using the table saw were completed.
• Students completed the safety test for the table saw.
• Students were shown their first project: The Angled Box Project. A hard copy was given to each student. Student are to have either Mr. K or Mr. Stockwell initial each step as steps are completed.

WEDNESDAY, 9/12/18

• OBJECTIVE: Students will review the safety procedures for the chop saw, jointer, planer, and table saw.
• Demonstrations using the chop saw, jointer, and planer were performed.

THURSDAY, 9/6/18

• Students were given a brief introduction to the class.
• Students with safety glasses from previous classes or at home were asked to bring them with them next period.
• Students then logged into one of the new Chromebook laptops and followed these Setting Up Computer and Device Access Instructions to create an account upon the chromebook and sign up for Google Classroom.
• Students completed the Initial Class Survey.
• General shop safety guidelines were discussed. When finished, students went out to the shop and started to review the safe use of the school's band saws, drill presses, floor sanders, and scroll saws.
