The focus of Science in eighth grade is Physical Science. We will be using Holt Science & Technology which is designed with new activities and visual resources.  The recently revised middle school science program includes new supplementary resources designed to reach students of all abilities.  Numerous labs, hands-on activities, and interdisciplinary connections show students how science interconnects in their world.  Grading is based on a combination of the following:

• • Homework (formative)

  • Classwork (formative)

  • Participation/Collaboration (formative) 

  • Skill Building (formative)

  • Published Writing - Science notebooks/Completed Labs (summative)

  • Tests/Quizzes (summative)

  • Exams/Projects  “Science Fair” (summative)

Formative=20% of grade

Summative = 80% of grade

The science program has been designed to create a new focus on learning theories that help students grasp science in a meaningful way.  The research-proven strategies and materials will help make an even more relevant and effective science program for middle school students.  The goal is to develop scientifically literate students. 

OBJECTIVES:

• Understanding of important science concepts, processes, and ideas.

• Use of higher order thinking skills.

• Ability to solve problems and apply scientific principles.

• Commitment to environmental protection.

• Interest in independent study of scientific topics.

• Social skills.

• Communication skills.

• Study skills.

All students will have Science in the classrooms three days a week. Each student will also have a hands-on Lab Investigation each week in the Science Lab. These happen twice a week in a half class setting, working either in small groups, partners, or individually. 

NOTE: Because of the emphasis on hands-on work, the equipment and materials used, and the structure of labs around group work, it is very difficult for students to make up labs. Make up lab time will be available by appointment with Mrs. Gialis during lunch periods or after-school from 3-4 pm. If a student misses their lab day, they will have 8 days to make up the lab at a lunch or after-school session.
