Carl Herz `50, earned his Ph.D. at Princetin before returning to Cornell as a faculty 1953-1969
Lisl Gaal (Isle Novak) was the first woman to serve the department with the title of Assistant Professor. She and her husband stayed at Cornell between 1953 and 1957.
Jack Kifer joined the department as Instructor in 1951. He left in 1974.
Peter Hilton, at Cornell between 1958 and 1961, contributed to established the Cornell Tology group.
Irma (Moses) Reiner and Irving Reiner. Irma earned her Bachelor degree and her mathematics Ph.D. at Cornell under Burton W. Jones (1946). Irving Reiner earned his Ph.D. under Burton W. Jones in 1947. Jones was professor at Cornell from 1930 to 1948 when he moved to the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Walter Feit (at Cornell, 1953-1964) and Sidnie Dresher `57. Sidnie and Walter married in 1957. Sidnie eraned her Ph.D. earned her Cornell mathematics Ph.D., k-mersions of Manifolds, under Israel Berstein in 1968. Her thesis, published in Acta Mathematica, generalizes the Smale-Hirsch classification of immersions.
During the 1950s and 1060s, thee areas of mathematics established a long lasting presence at Cornell that is still felt today in the department: Topology (Olum, Livesay, Hilton, W. Browder and Berstein), Logic (Rosser Lisl Gaal, Nerode and Kochen), and Probability and Statistics (Kac, Feller, Hunt, Wolfowitz, Kifer, Farrell, Kesten, Spitzer) with many other passing through the department during the booming growth of the 1960s. Algebra, Analysis and Mathematical Physiscs were also well represented.
