'There's nothing I believe in more strongly than getting young people interested in science and engineering, for a better tomorrow, for all humankind.' Bill Nye
For so many of us in the sciences, there was that pivotal early moment of being excited, being astonished or even being puzzled by something in front of us as we took our first few steps exploring what this science thing is. Whether it was seeing cells under the microscope for the first time, getting a look at what goes on in living systems under the surface, witnessing a surprising color changing chemical reaction or even using simple household materials make the most awesome slime, those early experiences can set someone on a lifetime adventure exploring science and many of us have feel the calling and have the passion to share that with the next generation.
Concordia Science Academy is a science outreach organization dedicated to providing educational and entertaining hands-on science experiences for kids of all ages (K-12 and beyond) and we've being doing this for almost 15 years across North Dakota, Minnesota and beyond. The program is coordinated by myself with the invaluable support of a number of science students from all disciplines at Concordia College and without whom, Concordia Science Academy would not be the success it grew into over the past decade.
Whether it be going on the road for classroom visits or having young scientists come join us here to do science at Concordia, we've worked with many schools and teachers from the FM area and beyond. And it doesn't stop there - to bring science to a wider audience we've partnered with many community organizations such as Fargo and Moorhead (LARL) Libraries, Fargo Parks, Streets Alive and many more. Prior to COVID, we were interacting with thousands of budding and curious scientists of all ages each year in the Fargo Moorhead area and beyond and in the Fall of 2021, we are getting back out there....
Examples of recent Science Outreach events:
Minnesota State Fair: We were the only non-cities organization invited to be part of the opening day STEM day events organized by SciMathMN. We've staffed an activity booth and performed on stage at this prestigious event which even in COVID times has thousands of attendees
The Lab (ongoing collaboration with Fargo Parks): We designed and volunteered as part of a one day event at Rheault Farm in Fargo which allowed participants (over 300 attendees) to carry out hands-on science activities and investigations
Cobber Kids: We visit the local pre-K class every other week and do hands-on science activities with Cobbers serving as Science Buddies for these very young Scientists
School Visits: Want to be part of bringing science outreach to your hometown? Work with Dr. Wyllie and it could be possible. We've visited many local elementary schools and make regular annual visits to Robert Asp and DGF elementary.
