Act 1 : Love and Hardship
The Setting : A bleak, depression-era, post-apocalyptic world where Hermes introduces the characters.
The Romance : Orpheus, a poor, optimistic songwriter, falls instantly in love with Eurydice, a resilient and hungry young survivor.
The Conflict : Winter arrives with severe scarcity, straining the relationship between King Hades and Persephone, who argues that Hades has turned his underground factory, Hadestown, into a cold place of rigid control.
The Descent : Persuaded by the Fates and driven by the promise of food, warmth, and security, Eurydice chooses to sign a contract with Hades and boards the train to Hadestown, losing her name, her identity, her memory and freedom on the assembly line.
Act 2 : The Quest and the Tragic Turn
The Search : Orpheus discovers Eurydice has vanished and journeys through the dangerous path to the underworld, armed only with his music.
The Song : Orpheus sings the song he wrote to repair the natural world and fix the rift between Hades and Persephone; moved, Hades allows Orpheus to lead Eurydice back.
The Deal : Hades permits them to leave on one condition - Orpheus must walk ahead and trust that Eurydice is following, without looking back until they reach the upper world.
The Ending : Overcome by doubt right at the border, Orpheus turns to look at Eurydice, and she is pulled back into Hadestown forever.
