2026-27 SMS Winter Sports Tryouts and Information

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Basketball tryouts for all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade student-athletes will begin Monday, November 9th.

Below is the tryout schedule for the 2026-27 Winter Season. Tryouts will be held November 9th, 10th and 12th.

Girls Basketball Tryouts: 2:30 - 4:15 PM

Boys Basketball Tryouts: 4:15 - 5:45 PM

OPEN GYM

SMS will host OPEN GYM TIMES before tryouts
This is open to ALL PLAYERS who will be trying out
Dates/Times:
- Wednesday, 11/4 (Girls) from 2:30pm - 4:15pm.
- Thursday, 11/5 (Boys) from 2:30pm - 4:15pm.
All students looking to stay for open gym must either be picked up at 4:15 or take the late bus home. Please update Pick-Up Patrol.

** Attendance is not mandatory and will not determine a player’s spot on the team, it’s just a time to get in the gym and play before tryouts **

Appropriate footwear
Personal water bottles
Completed Parent permission via Final Forms
Updated Physical uploaded to Final Forms

All students-athletes trying out must have all registration forms COMPLETED through FinalForms, our online registration system here at SMS!

Ensure you have an updated physical that will stay valid for the duration of the season - it must be done within the last two years. *YOU WILL HAVE TO UPLOAD THE UPDATED PHYSICAL INTO FINAL FORMS*

** In order to try out, your student-athlete must be signed up in FinalForms AND have their updated physical uploaded to FinalForms or they will not be allowed to try out **

All players trying out must be committed to all practices & games. If any players have a conflict, please ensure they speak to their respective coach as soon as possible.

Please Know That…

Tryouts will last for three days: November 9th, 10th, and 12th.
A and B boys and girls teams will be made after Thursday’s tryout.
Cuts may be made before Thursday at the coach's discretion based on player evaluations.
The number of players on a team will be determined at the coach's discretion.
Any cuts made will be done through an email, sent directly to the parents/guardians. Once an email is received, if additional feedback is needed, parents and guardians may reply or set up an individual meeting with the coaching staff during office hours the Friday after the cuts have been made.

For The Girls Team Tryouts:

All girls basketball players must leave at 4:15 when tryouts end. Please note transportation plans in Pick-Up Patrol.
They may not stay after practice to watch the boys play.

For The Boys Team Tryouts:

All boys basketball players trying out should plan on going home after school and return to SMS no later than 4:15 PM for their tryouts. Please come in through the lower back gymnasium door.
Parent/guardian pick-up will be 5:45 PM in the back parking lot following tryouts each day.

Please Note: Parents/guardians picking up their child should do so in the Upper Back Parking Lot

Practice Time Schedule starting Monday, November 16th:

2:30 - 4:15
4:15 - 5:45
5:45 - 7:15

** Practice times are subject to change due to coaches still being hired. **

Player Eligibility:

Please refer to the 2026-27 SMS Student Handbook and review the Academic and Behavioral expectations.

Parent Meeting:

● A brief meeting will be held on Friday, November 13th from 5:00 to 6:00 pm in the South Meadow School Gym for all families and student-athletes who have made the SMS Winter teams. In this session, there will be an opportunity to meet the coaches, go through expectations, and get answers to any questions that families may have.
