Teaching - A New Lesson Every Day
When I applied to college I knew I wanted to major in business, but what did I want to do with that degree? I had no idea! Once I arrived at college and was introduced to my resident assistant (RA), she told me she was a business education major. It sounded interesting, but what could you do with that major? When she explained it to me, I was hooked. From that day on I knew I wanted to teach business to high school students. This was almost 38 years ago. If you think back 38 years, so much has changed. My first classes were typing I and shorthand. I taught typing on typewriters and shorthand was putting together symbols to make words. Fast forward 38 years and we don't teach typing or shorthand any more. We do teach business management, marketing, and law. How do we teach them? Using computers and the Internet - which weren't invented when I started teaching! While the content of the new courses is nothing like it was 38 years ago, the art of teaching has the same concept. I truly enjoy working with young adults every day. There are always new experiences and great aha moments. The most important lesson I've learned from the classroom is you never stop learning. Something I enjoy doing every day with my students.
