Foundational Skills

  • ​Knows and applies phonics and word analysis skills

Student had mastered all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication patterns, roots, and affixes to read unfamiliar multi-syllable words.

  • Reads text fluently with accuracy and expression

Student can read grade-level text accurately with expression and understanding. Student can read at benchmark level (136 correct words per minute). Student uses context to self correct for understanding.

Fall: 105 wpm

Winter:120 wpm

Spring: 136 wpm

  • Uses strategies to determine the meaning of words

Student can use strategies (reference materials, context, word parts, background knowledge) to determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language and idioms.

  • Expands written and spoken vocabulary

Student can use strategies (context clues, word parts, glossaries, or dictionaries) to determine the meaning of words relevant to Grade 4 topics or subject areas to use to use in their writing or spoken language.


Literature and Informational Text

  • Retells key ideas and details from a text

Student can retell a grade level story, including determining theme, describing characters, settings, and events in depth.

  • Uses evidence from the text to support conclusions

Student can refer to details and examples in a grade-level text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

  • Uses text features to strengthen comprehension

Student can interpret information presented in charts, graphs, diagrams, timelines, animations, or interactive elements and explain how the information helps in understanding a grade-level text.

  • Compares and contrasts texts

Student can compare and contrast themes, topics, patterns of events in literature, or structure, sources, and information presented in informational (grade-level) text.

  • Reads and comprehends grade level text

Student can use comprehension strategies for grade-level text and can use knowledge of word structure, vocabulary, and writing style to independently understand grade-level text..


Writing

  • States and supports an opinion about a topic or text

Student can clearly introduce a topic, state an opinion, and support it in an organized fashion using specific reasons, facts, and details. Student can use linking phrases and provide a conclusion.

  • Writes informative texts to convey ideas/information

Student can introduce a topic and develop it in an organized way, with paragraphs or sections; use facts and details; link ideas within categories; use precise vocabulary; and provide a conclusion.

  • Writes narratives about real life or imagined experiences or events

Student can establish situation, characters, and sequence of a story; use description and dialogue to develop it; use transitional words; and provide a logical conclusion.

  • Uses proper grammar and conventions

Student can correctly use pronouns, (who, whose, whom, which), adverbs (where, when, why), various verb tenses, prepositional phrases, and homophones, and produce complete sentences. Students can recognize and correct fragments and run-­ons; use correct capitalization and punctuation, including commas and quotation marks.

  • Applies grade-level spelling rules and patterns

Student can spell grade-appropriate words correctly, using references as needed.


Speaking and Listening

  • Follows agreed-upon rules for discussions

Student can come prepared and join in discussions (one-on-one, in groups, teacher-led) on Grade 4 topics and build on others' ideas and express their own clearly.

  • Presents thoughts and ideas clearly

Student can use evidence to support ideas and can express his/her ideas clearly.
