Ratio of Positive Interactions
3:1
*3 positive interactions for every 1 corrective interaction
*It all depends on what the STUDENT is doing at the moment of the interaction.
Ways to Increase Your Positive Interaction:
1. Provide noncontingent attention: common areas, free time, transitions, etc.
2. Use brief physical contact.
3. Use positive nicknames.
4. Give positive farewells.
5. Express interest in classwork (for your and other classes).
6. Learn foreign-language greetings and farewells (for ELL students).
7. Ask about activities outside of school.
8. In common areas, make eye contact and smile with every few students.
9. After a corrective interaction, remind yourself to deliver at least three positive interactions.
10. Use reminders to provide noncontingent attention to specific students who are struggling.
11. Use the 10–10–10 approach (10 comments to 10 students by 10:00 a.m.).
12. Use the 10 by 2 approach (for 10 days, spend 2 minutes talking with an individual student).
13. Recognize student birthdays.
14. Program a reminder to deliver positive feedback.
15. Pick a student to be famous for the day.
16. Use a common occurrence as a reminder to interact positively.
17. Write brief positive notes.
18. Publicly post examples of positive work.
19. Praise one student, then immediately praise another for similar behavior.
20. Make two positive phone calls to parents each week.
