• Reading stamina is the ability to focus and read independently for a period of time. Use a stopwatch and this tracker to see your child's growth throughout the summer.

Reading Comprehension

• Nonfiction Text: Read a book and choose 1-2 questions to answer.

• Fiction Text: Read a book and choose 1-2 questions to answer. 

• Here are high impact questions we would like our students to practice.

  • Tell the important events that happened in this text. 

  • Summarize the important information or events in the text

  • What is the writer's message? How does this message mean to you in your own life?

• Playing a board game is a great way to promote reading and language skills. Here is our teacher-created list of game ideas:

Responding to Text

• Choose a fiction text of your choice and select one question to respond to by writing in a journal or typing on a blank document.

Typing Skills

• To support your child to responding to text, we want our students to practice typing. Use Typing.com  or Typing Club to practice proper typing techniques. 

Editing Written Responses

• Use  writing checklist to check for proper grammar skills on written or typed responses.

Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction Facts

• Students entering 5th grade should know their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts with ease.  Students should recall their facts within 5-7 seconds.

Decimal Place Value

• In 5th grade it is important that student read decimal numbers using correct place value.  For example the number 4.14 should not be read as four point fourteen.  It should be read as four and fourteen hundredths.  Students should be proficient reading numbers up to the 1 billions place and down to the hundredths place (two places away from the decimal).

• Practice counting a collection of coins over a dollar.  Write the money amount and read it as you would read money, then read it as you would read a decimal.  Example: $1.30 would be read as 1 dollar and 30 cents.  In place value form we would read it 1 and 30 hundredths or you can say 1 and 3 tenths. 

• Use these games to practice comparing decimals in standard form, pictorial form, and using money.
