Dual Credit FAQ's

When you complete the application to Lone Star College, you will receive an email with your Lone Star ID number. This is important for you to keep for your records. You can not sign up for a dual credit course without it. 

After you complete the application, Lone Star will email you this information. We encourage you to go in and change your password to Stu+GOHS Student ID (ex. STU123456). 


What do I do if I can't log into My Lone Star account?

Call Lone Star College's Help Service Desk at 832-813-6600.


I applied to Lone Star, but haven't received an acceptance email.

Please give Lone Star 24-72 hours to send acceptance email with Lone Star ID Number and further steps.


Do I need to apply to Lone Star if I already have a Lone Star ID?

If you have applied to Lone Star and you have a Lone Star ID number, you do not need to reapply.

Why do I have to watch the pre-assessment video?

It's required by Lone Star that you watch the pre-assessment video. You will not be able to take the TSIA 2 without completing this step. If you qualify without the TSIA 2 test, then you do not need to watch the video. 

How do I sign up for the TSIA 2 test?

If you need to take the TSIA 2 test, see your counselor for details. Please note that you are not able to sign up for the test until you have completed the Lone Star application AND the pre-assessment video.

I am only interested in taking an English class. Do I have to take the entire TSI 2.0 test?

Yes, you must have the entire TSIA 2 test on file. If you need to retake only part of the TSIA 2, then we will allow you to re-test only those specific sections, but only after you have completed the full test. 

How do I pay for my courses?

You will pay through your myLonestar portal. If payment is not completed before the deadline, Lone Star College will drop you from all Dual Credit courses and your counselor will then change your schedule. The fall payment window usually opens at the end of May. The spring payment window usually opens at the end of November. 

Do I need to upload a Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination Record?

Only students taking a Dual Credit course on the Lone Star College campus need to upload this document. Students taking a Dual Credit course on the GOHS campus may disregard this message.

What is the difference between dual credit and college credit only courses?

Dual credit courses must be approved and signed off on as accepted as dual credit by your high school. If the courses qualify for dual credit, it will also qualify for a reduced tuition waiver. College credit only classes are those that the HS designates as not eligible for high school creidt. This can occur if the student has already taken an equivalent course, or the ISD doesn't accept that course as dual credit. College credit only classes are not eligible for the reduced tuition waiver, and therefore students are required to pay full tuition. 

What is the difference between dual credit, advanced placement, and articulated credit?

Dual Credit: College-level courses taken to receive college and high school credit at the same time. Courses are taught by an instructor who meets the LSC master's degree requirements fot that subject area and the student will receive a grade on their LSC transcript and their HS transcript. Classes are guaranteed to transfer to Texas Public Institutions and generally transferred to many surrounding state institutions.

Advanced Placement (AP): College-level courses offered in high school designed by committees of college faculty and AP teachers. Students must take a comprehensive exam at the end of the school year in order to achieve credit. The AP exam score to achieve college credit varies from school to school. If the student does not pass the exam, no credit is awarded and the student does not receive a college transcript during HS.

Articulated Credit: Receive college credit for taking high school technical courses at community colleges participating in the Advanced Technical Credit (ATC) program.

May I take summer courses?

You will need counselor approval and will be required to pay full tuition. Summer courses are more accelerated than regular length classes because they are only six weeks long. 

May I take mini-term courses in May or December?

You will need counselor approval and will be required to pay full tuition. Mini-term courses are extremely accelerated compared to regular length classes because they are only three to four weeks long. 

What happens if I fail a dual credit course?

If you fail a dual credit course, or make a grade below a C, you will no longer be eligible to continue in the dual credit program. If you fail a dual credit course in the middle of the academic year, you will be moved from your dual credit course into a non-DC course in the following semester and will NOT be permitted to continue. 

Does the cost of tuition include books?

No, the reduced tuition that you pay as a dual credit student does not cover the cost of books. 

How do I drop or withdraw from my course(s)?

You must obtain an official Lone Star College Dual Credit Drop Form from your high school counselor. In addition, you must return the completed form to your high school counselor in oder to completely drop or withdraw from the requested course(s). If you wish to withdraw after the "Official Day of Record" according to the LSC calendar, your college transcript will reflect a "W" for withdrawn from the course(s). "W's" for dual credit courses do not count toward the six drop limit. Standard LSC refund policies will apply. 

What happens if I transfer high schools after classes have started?

If you transfer high schools after the first day of classes, you will be dropped from your dual credit courses if the W date has not passed. If the W date has passed, please work with your high school and dual credit teacher to arrange completion of the coursework, if possible. 

Will my dual credit classes transfer?

Yes! All the academic classes that are eligible for dual credit are part of the core curriculum at LSC. This means that these classes will transfer to any Texas public institution. Dual credit classes also transfer to several surrounding state schools as well as Texas private schools as well. Always contact your prospective college or university for information on transfer and DC course acceptance. 

What does the dual credit waiver cover?

The dual credit waiver reduces tuition cost for each LSC class. The dual credit waiver does not cover additional lab fees or textbooks. 

How many dual credit classes can I take each semester?

You can take up to a maximum of 18 credit hours in a full semester (16 weeks). In the summer semester, you may take up to 2 courses in each 6 week session. You may take a maximum of 1 course during the mini-mester. It is strongly recommended that new dual credit students take no more than 2-3 courses in the first semester of the program. 

What tests can I use to qualify to take dual credit courses? Do I need to take the full TSI exam to take dual credit?

You can use PSAT, SAT, ACT, or TSI scores . If it's your first time taking the TSI exam as a dual credit student and you do not have any other qualifying test scores in the LSC system, you MUST take the full TSI exam. If you have partial qualifying scores in the LSC system, you may take the portion of the test you need to qualify in other subject areads. The TSI testing fee for dual credit students is waived for the first visit only, regardless of whether or not you take the full exam. 

Why would I need to fill out a FERPA form?

Even though you may be under the age of 18, as a LSC dual credit student, you are still covered under the federal guidelines that restrict Lone Star College from communicating with anyone other than the student. Completion of this form would allow parents/guardians the right to access a child's academic records. FERPA does not require college instructors, advisors, or other college entities to correspond with parents/guardians outside the realms of the request. Alternatively, you may provide a copy of your tax return showing the student as a dependent in order to achieve access to academic records. While this document is not required, it is highly recommended. 

At what age can a student enroll in a dual credit course?

While there is no age requirement to enroll in a dual credit classes, students under the age of 14 must meet obtain approval to enroll in classes. Students 15 years of age and younger must have a parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult present on campus at all times while they are on campus. Parents are not allowed to sit in the classroom with their children.

Who do I meet with to register for classes?

All registration should occur through your high school counselor. Students must follow the registration information and deadlines before starting the dual credit registration process. Without high school approval, students may not register for dual credit courses. All registration forms for dual credit must come directly from the high school. They can NOT be delivered to the LSC-Montgomery campus by students or parents. 

I am a junior in English 3 Honors or AP English 3. Can I still take Dual Credit English 4 next year?

Yes! We offer English 1301 & 1302 for juniors as English 3 and seniors as English 4. You must complete the Dual Credit process to sign up.

I want to take a higher level math (Trig, Pre-Cal, Cal) instead of College Algebra? How do I qualify?

For all of the following, you must submit qualifying test scores (TSI, PSAT, SAT, or ACT) and place in at least college level in college algebra (Math 1314).
