Throughout the year, DECA members collaborate to compete in prepared, role play, or online events where they put their business knowledge and expertise to the test.
PREPARED EVENTS
In prepared events, competitors are given a prompt based on which they must develop an original written paper and/or oral presentation. Prior to competition, judges will receive and review their written paper (if applicable to event). At competition, competitors will present their ideas to the judge. Some prepared events also require testing.
ROLEPLAY EVENTS
In roleplay events, competitors spend the months prior to competition studying and reviewing the major principles and key terms of their chosen business discipline. They then take a 100-question online test over this material. At competition, competitors will be given a prompt that relates to their chosen business discipline. They will have time to prepare a response, which they will then present to a judge.
ONLINE EVENTS
In online events, competitors compete through virtual simulations of a restaurant, retail business, sports and entertainment facility, or many other such venues. Within a designated time period, their goal is to use their knowledge of business, finance, marketing, and entrepreneurship to be as financially successful as possible within their simulation.
SBE
A school-based enterprise (SBE) is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods/services to meet the needs of the market. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate National Curriculum Standards in marketing, finance, hospitality or management.
