Many Kiddos are wearing summer shorts that are short (sweatshirts and tops are longer), please remind kiddos that shorts and skirts should me fingertip/mid thigh and leggings may be worn if top is covering their bottoms.
Cell phones and smart watches are not permitted at school. If brought, they must be turned off and placed in the students bag until they are on their way home.
TIme is given at school to complete assignments, with due dates reflected for time allowed. These times include: in class, GRIT, Before school and while waiting for busses/cars to be called. There will be times that teachers allow for students to attend Lunch Bunch to work on assignments or get extra help through out the year. It is the responsibility of the student to use this time wisely to avoid completing work at home.
Any assignments that are not completed in class will need to be completed at home before the due date. Late Assignments will receive 10 points off for up to 5 days late, but will not be accepted after the 5th day. Absent days will get extension of how many days the child was absent. Absent on due date of lengthy assignments, does not qualify for absent extensions.

Reminder for kiddos, please check grades weekly to make sure that you do not have any missing assignments. You have time to work on them before morning announcements, during GRIT, during the make up station, and while waiting for you bus to be called. If you use your time wisely, you should not have any missing assignments or homework.

Snack Time Reminders: Students may have snack after Specials at a time their Teacher has designated. Please Choose Snacks Responsibly.

Reading

We are continuing our fiction unit and growing our stamina as readers. We will be diving deeper into the setting of a story and how it impacts the plot. We will also focus on theme and comparing themes/messages across multiple fiction works. Students will grow deeper in their inference skills - using clues from the story and our own background knowledge (schema) to determine something about a character, setting, conflict, etc.

We take our first common assessment (fiction checkpoint) on Thursday, September 17th.

25/26 Reading/Writing Anchor Charts

Writing

Students started the year by learning how to write a C.E.R. response (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning). There are 2 great videos below to show what that would look like posted below. Our focus for September is responding to our reading through writing. We will also learn to paraphrase and summarize along with using transitions to move between paragraphs and thoughts in our writing. We will use the writing process (brainstorm, prewrite, draft, edit, revise, and publish) to construct our first personal narrative. Students will be expected to write in complex sentences and be able to identify and correct fragments and run-ons in their writing.

Our first writing project will be hanging in the halls for Open House, September 3rd!

Math

Sixth Grade Math

Welcome back, Cubs! 🐻🐾

August was a fantastic start to the school year! We hit the ground running by reviewing key 5th-grade skills, including multiplying and dividing decimals and fractions.

Now, we’re stepping into the negative zone and taking our number skills to the next level! Here’s a quick peek at what we’re tackling in our current topics:

Topic 2: Classifying & Navigating Rational Numbers
1. Classifying Numbers & Integers: Students will classify whole numbers, integers, and rational numbers, understanding how positive and negative values function in real-world contexts like temperature, elevation, and bank balances.
2. Number Lines & Absolute Value: We’re placing positive and negative fractions and decimals right where they belong on the number line, while mastering absolute value to measure a number’s distance from zero.
3. Coordinate Plane: Students will plot and locate points across all four quadrants of the coordinate plane using ordered pairs (x, y).
4. TOPIC 2 with links to SAVVAS videos
Topic 3: Integer Operations: Time to put those numbers to work! Students will relate integers to their opposites and master adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative numbers to solve real-world problems.
1. Integers & Opposites: Students will explore the concept of additive inverses (numbers that combine to make zero).
2. The Four Operations: We are learning the specific rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative integers, then using those skills to solve multi-step word problems.

How You Can Help at Home:

Please continue to support your student’s growth by practicing multiplication facts at home! Right now, we are focusing heavily on 2s, 5s, and 10s, but mastering all multiplication facts is super important for staying fast and confident in class while solving multi-step integer problems.

You can also ask your Cub to explain what spending $5 on a snack and diving 5 feet underwater have in common. (Spoiler: They’re opposites!)

Advanced Math

August was an incredible start to the school year! We hit the ground running by reviewing foundational 5th-grade skills, including multi-digit decimal operations and fraction multiplication and division.

Now, our Advanced Math crew is moving into deeper territory—exploring spatial reasoning, geometric proofs, and proportional relationships! Here is an exact look at what we're tackling in our next two topics:

Topic 2: Analyzing Geometric Relationships
- Triangle Properties & Angle Rules: Students will draw triangles given specific side lengths or angle measures, investigate triangle side-length inequalities, and apply complementary, supplementary, vertical, and adjacent angle relationships to solve for unknown variables.
- Polygon Area Strategies: We’re moving beyond standard rectangles to calculate the exact areas of parallelograms, rhombuses, triangles, trapezoids, and kites by decomposing complex shapes into simpler regions.
- Prism Volume: Students will apply fractional dimension formulas to calculate the exact volume of right rectangular prisms.

Topic 3: Understanding & Using Ratio and Rate
- Ratios & Proportions: We’ll distinguish between additive and multiplicative relationships, identify patterns in equivalent ratios, compare ratios using double number lines, and plot ratio pairs on coordinate graphs.
- Rates & Unit Rates: Students will connect general ratios to unit rates, apply unit pricing and constant speed concepts to solve comparisons, and use ratio reasoning to convert measurements across both Customary (inches, feet, pounds) and Metric (meters, grams, liters) systems.

How You Can Help at Home: Please continue supporting your student’s automaticity by practicing multiplication facts at home! We are currently focusing heavily on 2s, 5s, and 10s, but mastery of all facts (0–12) is vital for speeding through complex multi-step ratio and geometry formulas.

The month of September brings us the Periodic Table as well as Mixture and Changes. We will focus on reading the periodic table and how it is categorized by metals, nonmetals, metalloids and rare Earth elements using the Period Table.

Social Studies

This month, students will be exploring key concepts of culture and government. We’ll begin by learning what culture is, how it is reflected in Canada and the United States, and how it spreads through cultural diffusion and multiculturalism. Students will then shift to the study of government, comparing limited and unlimited governments, exploring types of government from Ancient Greece to modern systems, and applying these ideas to real-world examples. We’ll also discuss citizenship—including U.S. citizenship, rights, and responsibilities—and practice analyzing political cartoons to connect government and culture to current events.
