Hello Peer Mentors,

Pink Shirt Day has provided us the opportunity to have conversations around bullying, acceptance, kindness and mental health. This is a good time to remind you that your work is so important and means so much to your mentee, your mentee's families, and our school community. High Five's all around! Please know that your hard work does not go unnoticed and that you are supported! This poem by Kid President is dedicated to all of you!

“Keep going. Keep going. Keep going”

The world is so big,

and we’re all so small.

Sometimes it feels like

we can’t do anything at all.

But the world can be better

(in spite of its flaws).

The world can be better,

and you’ll be the cause.

Even though the waves

are bigger than our boats…

The wind keeps us sailing;

Its love gives us hope.

Some days it’s dark,

but we’ll keep on rowing,

Because people like you whisper

Keep going, keep going, keep going.

Hello Peer Mentors!

What an amazing group of individuals you all are! When we talk about the heart of our school, this is what we are talking about!

Thank you all for the important work you do! Your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed and all the teachers and staff are deeply appreciative of your efforts and commitment. As we dig into your peer mentor feedback, your responses strongly indicate that you are making a difference and for that you should feel proud!

In the spirit of Pink Shirt Day Day, it is a fitting time to reflect on how we foster inclusion?

What does inclusion mean to you?

How do you make your mentee feel welcome, wanted and accepted?

TheCGBros Presents "Ian" by Mundoloco CGI Ian Foundation - He was born with cerebral palsy. All he wants is to make friends, although it seems impossible to achieve when discrimination and bullying keep him away from his beloved playground. However, this young boy is determined and won’t give up easily.

Welcome to Tech Free Time!!

This short video speaks volumes about the quality of our time spent together and what it looks like when electronic devices are used versus when they are not.

Today in peer mentoring do something new, learn something new, reconnect, have some laughs, be creative, be purposeful with your time together!

As you embark on your disconnected time together, our new grade 8 guest blogger would like to share some inspiration.

What can we do?

I’ve read in your log forms and we have heard some comments that peer mentors are running out of ideas for spending time together.

This is a great time to share some strategies for working together and reviving your time together.

  • Work with your mentee away from your friends and their friends. This gives the message that you care about them and are interested in having a friendship with them. If you work with others, keep your groups to only 2 pairs
  • Spend a few minutes talking to your mentee, chatting about things that are important to them before getting into anything work related. This will help remind your mentee that you are interested in them and you are there to listen, this develop trust.
  • Before you leave your mentee’s classroom, ask their teacher if there is anything specific they need to accomplish in the time you have.
  • Ask your mentee if they want to reach a certain goal before the time is over. Help them achieve it then celebrate it!
  • If you know your mentee is more excited for the social time, try breaking up your time. i.e 10 minutes of this, 10 minutes of that, 10 minutes of this and that.
  • Spend some time in their classroom, show interest in their space.
  • Try doing something that isn’t school related, develop a special project, create a gratitude journal, write a story, check the resources tab for ideas!
  • I know quiet space is tough to find sometimes, but there are several classrooms that are available for quiet work.
  • Have fun and keep your time together lighthearted!
  • When in doubt, always ask for help.

Lastly, be sure to check the ideas and resources tab on the website for some ideas. You can also now stop by Ms. Groeller's classroom to pick up some worksheets with crafts and games. https://sites.google.com/connectcharter.ca/peermentoring/resources/ideas

Please know that we are here for you and are very grateful for your patience and determination! You are why our school has such a big heart!! Thank you for dedicating yourself to this very important work!

We will be planning a check in soon, so please let us know if there is anyway we can help you or your mentee. You may not realize it some days, but the work you are doing to support your mentee and our school is so important and very meaningful!

Welcome Back to Peer Mentoring and to 2020!

This month in Alberta is Mentoring Month. What is mentoring month? It is a celebration of sorts, a recognition of your work, as well as an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mentoring. For the month of January we will be highlighting you!

January 8 is “I Am a Mentor Day”. This day is for mentors to celebrate their role and reflect on the ways their mentees have enhanced their world.

By creating a relationship based on trust and open communication, mentors help kids foster a sense of belonging, build self-confidence and learn new skills. Talking and spending time with engaged mentors provides children with positive experiences during periods of heightened brain development. That kind of positive mentoring can help children build a solid foundation that prepares them to adapt to their future demands of growing up.

Spending time with a young person may seem simple, but science tells us that healthy interactions with supportive mentors boosts children’s brain development, mental health, and wellbeing. Your presence, time, support, advice, friendship and constructive role modelling make a big difference.

So Mentors… keep mentoring!

December 16, 2019

This is our last day for peer mentoring until January. It is busy around our school this week with Peace Festival and some students leaving early for break.

If you don't get a chance to see your student before break, please make every effort to try and see them. Make sure they know you’re looking forward to seeing them when we are back. Imagine how special they will feel if you sought them out, imagine how they will look up to you if you give them your time outside of peer mentoring, imagine how much they will be happy to return to school simply because you will be there.

Ideas for your time together

  • Ask your student if they need to finish up anything, students have a lot on their plates right now that they need to finish up. Unfinished work can cause a lot of stress and anxiety. See how you can help.
  • Share with each other what your family traditions are over the holidays. Then find out more about it. Research something, make something, write something. If they don't celebrate over the break, ask what they do learn more!
  • Are you or your student going anywhere over the break? Learn more about that place.
  • Enjoy each other’s company.

We would like to thank each of you for all of your work in peer mentoring! You may not realize how important this work is, but you continue to make a difference for your student and our school. This school has so much heart and you show it everyday by simply showing how much you care! Your hard work does not go unnoticed!

Happy Winter Break!

Hello Peer Mentors

A common worry we often hear from mentors is that their student isn’t listening or seems to be distracted. Here are a few things you can try:

  • Plan something ahead of time. Say "I have something I want to show you." or "I have something we can do together." Your mentee will quickly be drawn to you if you take on a bit more initiative, rather than just waiting for them to show you what they are doing in class.
  • When you first meet, make a plan for the time you have. 10 minutes of this, 20 minutes of that, 10 minutes of this and that. Focus on what you do in the time, not the time in which you have to do it. Doing the same activity for the entire time might get, boring so feel free to mix it up.
  • It is easy to be distracted when students aren’t in their classroom, so if you are needing a little more support, try moving into a supervised space. Please check the tvs and posters for spaces.

We really appreciate it when you ask for help and share your concerns in your log form. Your input is so valuable and helps us help you, it also helps us ensure the program is running smoothly or if we need to makes any changes. Thank you for your commitment to peer mentoring, your work is very important!

Hello Peer Mentors,

I wish you all could see what we see when we are walking around the school during peer mentoring, but how could you when you are so thoughtfully engaged with your mentee.

So, I wondered if providing a small sampling of your highlights (taken from your log forms) would paint a picture of how important and meaningful your work is.

  • When she said " I know this is the first time we met, but do you think I am smart?" And this hit me hard, because everyone should think they are smart. So I told her that she is smart, and very capable of doing good things.

  • One highlight about today was asking each other questions and getting to know each other more.

  • She told me that she liked peer mentoring.

  • We played basketball in the gym together. We had a lot of fun and helped expand our friendship.

  • She really let out her fun side and we got to laugh a lot.

  • When I was showing him some strategies to win our game.

  • At the end of the period, we were saying goodbye to each other, and when she was leaving she gave me a hug and it felt like a huge relief. I didn't know if she liked me or not, or if she was bored, this was completely new to me because I never had a peer mentee that had given me a hug before or memorized my name. This felt like the best feeling in the world at the time and I was smiling for the rest of the day.

  • It was fun playing the place value game because she taught me. So I was learning from her instead of me teaching her, so it was fun and unique.

  • Just being with my peer mentee, upon asking him,”What was one highlight of our time today,” and he replied, ”Being with my you,” that may have been my highlight.

  • When I learned we both love art and drawing, our conversation became really enjoyable, and it was fun to learn about the art that she likes to do.

  • Seeing each other again after a while.

  • We had a good time getting to know each other.

Do you know what all these means? Do you see what’s happening here?

Your time and friendship are making a meaningful difference for your mentee. On behalf of your mentees, our teachers, our families, our school communities...

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

If you're unsure of how important being a peer mentor is... then you need to watch this!

Hello Peer Mentors!

I might sound repetitive, but life is busy at our school. I believe we are quite fortunate to have so many opportunities and experiences to learn from. Our staff and many of our students put a lot of care into creating great days for all of us!

With that in mind, some of you may only be meeting your mentee for the first time or you need some extra time getting to know each other. Please check out the Ideas tab under Resources for some ideas on getting started and other things to do together. https://sites.google.com/connectcharter.ca/peermentoring/resources/ideas

Whether you are new or have known each other for a while now, here are ways to ensure you keep things going:

  • We love the idea of working with another pair, that is sometimes what is needed to help your student (or you) feel comfortable. Please keep groups to only 2 pairs. Any more than this will inhibit the development of trust and friendship with your student. Large groups tend to get rowdier which can make your student feel uneasy.
  • You only need to use one device at a time. When both of you have your device open it gives the illusion that you are not working together and not making an effort to connect. You may be asked by a teacher what you're up to.

Still Starting

So how did it go last peer mentoring day? Most of you met your mentee and some of you are meeting them for the first time today. So, we shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves as everyone is still getting to know each other.

There is still so much excitement and anticipation about Peer Mentoring. Last day we heard from so many teachers and students that the energy felt in the school was so positive and vibrant. You all continue to demonstrate that our school is amazing, but more than just that… you want to be part of the amaziness, the positivity, and the simple joy that comes from making a difference in the life of another. You continue to affirm that we are a school that values diversity and inclusion.

Yay Connect!

First Thing - Again

An updated list of matches have been distributed to your homeroom teacher. If you were not here for the first day of peer mentoring, or if you weren’t paired last time, please be sure to ask your teacher to see the list.

Next

At the start of peer mentoring, head to your student’s homeroom to pick them up. Introduce yourself (that is so important), and then head to a designated peer mentoring work space. See the TV’s and posters for those areas.

More info

I am very happy that everyone has a mentee! Please see the list in your homeroom.

Going Forward

Check the website for ideas and getting to know you activities. https://sites.google.com/connectcharter.ca/peermentoring/resources/ideas

Please make sure to fill out the peer mentor log form after each session. The information you provide is so important for your mentee and for the peer mentor program. https://sites.google.com/connectcharter.ca/peermentoring/log-forms
