The Lending Library was created to provide textbooks and other course materials to students for a full semester free of charge. The Lending Library is a collaboration between the Office of Sustainability, the Academic Resource Center and Residential Education and Living (REAL).
The Lending Library has open hours every day during the first two weeks of each semester at our main space in the Katherine Blunt (KB) lobby. To check out a book, come to KB during one of these times and a student will assist you. You can search the Lending Library catalog for what you need. Books are due on the last day of finals each semester and the return box will be placed outside of the KB space. Donate to the Lending Library by dropping books into the donation box outside of KB anytime during the semester or place it in one of the donation boxes in each residence hall during our annual Give ‘N Go program in May.
The Dressing Room, an on campus free thrift shop, is a collaboration between the Office of Sustainabilty (OoS) and Gender and Sexuality Programs (GSP). The Dressing Room is stocked with clothing, jackets, winter weather gear, shoes, and interview attire along with toiletries and some school supplies. The OoS and GSP also recently worked together to secure funding from the Student Government Association for gender-affirming sustainable items - chest binders and underwear packers that students can now access for free. Any student can come “shop” in our space in Larrabee 010 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8pm. GSP students also manage a Stylist Program that allows students who want a private shopping experience to access gender affirming clothing in a safe and empowering way. Request a stylist appointment by stopping by the LGBTQIA Center during any open hours.
CONN-Tainers Program
You can sign up for our reusable takeout container program at Harris Dining Hall just by swiping your Camel Card. When you want to take food out of the dining hall, request a container at the entrance. When you return your container, you'll be given either another conatiner or a carabiner to save for the next time you want to take out. As long as you return your container or carabiner at the end of the year, the program is free. If you lose your container, you'll be charged $10.
Generation Conscious Detergent Strips
All students can get up to 10 detergent strips for free each month from the dispenser located in Cro Lobby through our partnership with Generation Conscious. Detergent strips reduce plastic waste by eliminating the use of large, plastic detergent jugs. Bring an envelope or jar to store your strips in.
Spokespeople offers semester-long bike or longboard rentals for students for free with a returnable deposit of $50. To request a bike or longboard, you should first fill out this form. You’ll then be contacted by a student team member who will set up a time to pick up your bike or board. When you come to pick up your bike you will have to sign a liability waiver and a helmet agreement.
Established in 2013, Give 'N Go is a move-out donation program where students can donate a variety of goods including clothing, accessories, appliances, and other household items that are then donated to local agencies and sold to incoming first-year students at a low cost. You'll find donation boxes in each residence hall lobby or common room starting on the last day of class each May. Donations are collected through the day after commencement. Our partners for this program are the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut and Safe Futures.
Items accepted for recycling varies between cities and our recycling guidelines may not match what you were used to at home. In general, we accept rigid plastic containers, aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars, and cardboard in any recycling bin on campus. More details are on the posters below.
If you have doubts about an item, please put it into the trash to avoid contaminating our recycling or visit www.recycleCT.com to check if it can be recycled.
