Associate Professor of Neurobiology
Associate Professor of Neuroscience Institute
Department of Neurobiology, University of Chicago
Dr. Paschalis Kratsios is a developmental neurobiologist. After studying molecular biology and genetics at Democritus University of Thrace (Greece), he conducted his PhD studies in the field of developmental biology at European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Rome (Italy). During his postdoctoral training at Columbia University in New York (USA), Dr. Kratsios entered the field of developmental neuroscience. In 2016, he established his own lab at the University of Chicago (USA) to study motor neurons - specialized cells of the nervous system that control movement. His lab employs a unique approach that combines the specific strengths of three model systems (C. elegans, mice and human stem cell technology) to advance our molecular understanding of motor neuron development and disease. By focusing on motor neurons, a neuronal population targeted by devastating human disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his lab aims to reveal mechanisms broadly applicable to other neuron types affected by neurodevelopmental or neurodegenerative conditions. To date, he has published 41 articles. His work has been recognized through the receipt of highly competitive grants and awards. Dr. Kratsios is a reviewing editor for eLife and a grant reviewer for various funding agencies around the globe. Throughout his career, Dr. Kratsios has been mentoring Master’s students, PhD students, and postdocs, and regularly visits high schools to inspire the next generation for a career in science.
