The Business and Marketing pathway in Indiana's high schools is part of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) system, designed to provide students with essential financial, entrepreneurial, and management skills. This pathway is a direct route to fulfilling the state's Employability Skills requirement and, for the class of 2029 and beyond, helps students earn the Employment Honors Seal.
The program focuses on a blend of technical knowledge and critical soft skills needed in any professional environment.
Financial Literacy & Accounting: Students learn to read financial statements, create budgets, manage personal finances, and understand basic Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Business Management: This includes learning about leadership, organizational principles, resource management, and problem-solving within a business structure.
Marketing & Sales: Students gain skills in market analysis, product promotion, digital marketing strategies, and professional selling.
Technology & Data: Students become proficient in using Microsoft Office (especially Excel for spreadsheets and data management), presentation software, and digital communication tools.
Employability Skills: Through project-based learning and work experiences, students hone teamwork, ethical decision-making, professional communication (both written and oral), and a strong work ethic.
The business pathway offers students several tangible benefits that prepare them for life after high school.
Industry Certification: Students can pursue industry-recognized credentials (e.g., Microsoft Office Specialist, IC3 Digital Literacy) that are valued by employers and can satisfy a postsecondary-ready competency for graduation.
Dual Credit Opportunities: Many advanced business courses, such as Accounting and Management, are offered for dual credit, allowing students to earn high school and college credit simultaneously, often through Ivy Tech Community College or a similar partner.
Completing this pathway not only prepares students for college programs in business or finance but also equips them with practical, transferable skills for immediate entry into the workforce.
