The study of motor, perceptual and cognitive processes has traditionally been rooted in the examination of individuals in isolation. However, it is increasingly recognized that interaction between agents generate dynamics that coordinate their respective action, shape their sensorium, and transform their cognitive repertoire. Many of life’s most fundamental experiences—such as creativity, joy, or love—emerge not from the properties of individuals alone, but from the richness of interactional contexts.
Empirically, this shift in perspective introduces layers of complexity that are often explored in dyadic (two-person) settings. Yet, to fully grasp how these dynamics constrain and expand perceptual, motor, and cognitive capacities, a more comprehensive generalization to the principles of group dynamics is called for. In groups, agents form intricate networks of relationships, establishing topological structures that exponentially increase complexity. This complexity, in turn, allows cognitive behaviors to flourish in unprecedented ways, revealing the full splendor of agents’ action, perception, and cognition.
Embracing such complexity naturally calls for more ecological studies, but the rigor of controlled lab experiments is also required to channel this intricate complexity toward observables that are prone to causal analysis and modeling. New tools offer the potential for reconciliation. In particular, digital (re)constructions of reality (through Virtual, Extended, and Augmented Reality) and inclusions of interactive artificial agents hold great promise for new forms of investigations of behaviors in collective settings. These technologies allow people to engage dynamically within complex, yet controllable and designed environments, offering new avenues for experimentation and modeling.
The goal of this workshop is to foster interdisciplinary discussions among experts in multi-agent dynamics across different fields, such as, but not limited to, cognitive science, neuroscience, movement science, data sciences, sport and health sciences, AI, robotics, animal studies, design, and the arts. By presenting and debating research that brings multiple agents together —whether in physical or digital realities— the workshop aims to shed light on how we act, think and experience, within interactive collective contexts.
Attendance to this workshop is free of charge
