Born into a world of huge developments and fascinating evolution, Amelia Earhart, along with many other kids, showed great interest in the many new inventions of her time. In 1902, at the age of only six, Amelia was subject to another new invention, the airplane. Many years later, from 1917-1927, Amelia dedicated her life to learning the intricacies of the airplane. At the age of 31, in 1928, Amelia Earhart became the first female passenger to cross the Atlantic Ocean by airplane. This was done alongside another pilot by the name of Wilmur Stultz. It wasn’t until she was 35 (1932) that Amelia set out to achieve the flight that has made her famous. That flight being a “nonstop solo transatlantic flight”, meaning she was alone, the flight was a single, continuous flight with no stops, and this flight was over the Atlantic Ocean. Over the next few years, she published books of her journey and made many more flights, only to strangely disappear in 1937 at the age of 39 when flying over the Pacific Ocean, en route to Howland Island from Lae, Papua New Guinea.
In the years of 1900-1902, The Wright Brothers had been making and testing different ideas of unpowered flight, until reaching a point where they were satisfied, and moved onto different methods of powered flight. They continued these tests until 1903 when they finally perfected their dream and created the world's first ever airplane. Amelia, being six at the time, definitely grew up around planes, different and new flying vehicles quickly becoming a new worldwide norm. It is definitely possible that the convenient timing of the airplane's creation was a major factor that led Earhart to becoming the well known face of history that we know of today.
When Amelia wasn’t flying, she had other things going on in her life. In her mid 20’s, Earhart's inheritance from her grandmother (now passed to her mother) began to deplete after a bad investment in a failed gypsum mine. With little money, Amelia was driven to sell her “Canary” alongside a second Kinner. Using the money she purchased a two passenger yellow Kissel she named “Yellow Peril”. Around this time Amelia has also begun to have sinus issues which grew into a painful problem for her. This eventually drove her to have surgery done, ultimately being unsuccessful. After all this Amelia considered the potential of other hobbies, even going as far as attempting to start her own photography company. She soon realized it wasn’t for her, and reverted back to her life in the sky.
