Abstraction in neural networks and biomedical foundation models as novel paradigms for AI in life sciences
Nicola Toschi is a Physicist and Mathematician iwth a Phd in Natural sciences. a Full Professor of Medical Physics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and a Research Staff Associate at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging, Harvard Medical School under the O1 visa program (individuals with extraordinary abilities). Previously he worked as a strategic consultant at McKinsey and Company as well as for several non-profit organizations. He currently leads a research group active in AI for life science, Neuro- and Nanotech, neuromodulation, computational neuroscience and data science. He has secured over €30 million in research funding from major agencies, including the European Commission (Horizon Europe, H2020), NIH, DoD, and the Italian Ministry of Health. He has led multiple large-scale projects on AI-driven brain analysis, nanomedicine, advanced neurostimulation and consults for several industry segments (pharma, energy) on strategic ML/AI. Nicola has supervised over 100 students and researchers across Europe and published over 300 scientific papers cited over 10000 times in high-impact journals and serves on editorial and review boards for major scientific journals. He is an active member of international scientific societies and advisory panels.
