What do our communications look like?
These are the emails you receive automatically when you are selected by the lottery. It includes your deadline to upload your documents.
This is a similar email that goes out from one of our admin team when you are selected. This email introduces you to your admin and instructs you to let them know once your documents are uploaded so they can review them and enroll you!
If you upload your documents on time and are successfully enrolled in SYEP, this is the email you will receive!
This email is sent out automatically by DYCD to all participants enrolled the previous week. This email is sent directly by the city of New York, not from Commonpoint!
This is an example of a text you may receive while we are trying to get correct documents.

Frequently Asked Questions
The catalog is only sent out after you've uploaded your documents, received confirmation that you've been enrolled, and completed your 10 Hats & Ladders tasks AND your 1 hour virtual orientation session over Zoom. Most participants do not receive the worksite catalog for a few weeks after they are first selected from the lottery.
You can sign up for direct deposit as soon as you receive our confirmation email of your enrollment! This is typically sent the week AFTER you are first selected from the lottery.
No! Your proof of address document only has to match the address you entered on your SYEP application. It can have the the name of anyone currently living in your household.
All YY participants are in Cohort B this year.
If you are a part of Cohort A, you will be participating in SYEP from July 1st to August 10th. Most of our participants are in Cohort A. If you could not start on July 1st then we may have moved you to Cohort B, which means you will participate in SYEP from July 8th to August 17th. Both cohorts still run exactly 6 weeks, receive exactly the same job catalog, and are paid exactly the same. Unless you have been specifically told you will be starting on July 10th with Cohort B, you are most likely a Cohort A participant.
SYEP does not have a proof of vaccination requirement. However, worksites in NYC are allowed to ask for proof of vaccination and may turn you away if you cannot provide it.
You may not have worked your full hours. Please keep in mind that all hours must are approved by your supervisor or facilitator and any inaccuracies will be corrected. If you still believe you have been paid incorrectly, please reach out to us.
A Beginner's Guide to SYEP
What will I be doing this summer?
16-24 year olds you will participate in a work based experience that will match your interests and provide enriching career exploration, help foster leadership, networking and develop numerous skills. Youth will earn the New York State minimum wage of $16.00 an hour and may work up to 25 hours per week for six weeks in July and August.
14-15 year olds will learn about career opportunities and make a difference in the community through paid, Project- Based Learning (PBL) classes. Youth will be paid a stipend of $700 total, paid weekly throughout the six weeks of July and August.
How are Youth selected for the program?
Youth can be selected to the program via two options – through a lottery or direct recruitment by an SYEP provider to specialized programming. DYCD will conduct a lottery to select participants to the program. There will be more than one lottery to ensure that all seats in the program are filled. If you are selected by the lottery you will be contacted via the email address and/or phone number you provide in your application.
Can I attend Summer School and still participate in SYEP?
It will depend on your school schedule and whether it can accommodate both your work placement schedule and school.
Will I need internet access to participate in this program?
Yes, internet access is required to participate in SYEP. Please let your provider know if you do not have an internet connected device including a smartphone, iPad, or computer.
What is a provider?
A provider is the organization that collects your application, enrolls you and places you in your summer experience. Samuel Field YM&YWHA, Inc. is a provider of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). They handle recruitment, review required documents, enroll participants, facilitate orientation, develop worksites partnerships, and create PBL curriculum.
Am I allowed to change my provider after submitting my application?
No, once an application is submitted, a participant is required to remain with that provider.
What is DYCD?
DYCD (Department of Youth and Community Development) is the NYC agency that funds the program and determines program policy/document guidelines. They fund all aspects of the program including participant pay, determine required participant documents, and conduct program audits to ensure document compliance.
What is Payroll Commit?
Payroll Commit is the formal processing of the previous week’s hours which happens every Tuesday over the summer, starting with week 2.
