The Center of Excellence High School Summer Enrichment Science Academy (HSSESA) is one of the many support programs offered through the COE to facilitate entry to the Doctor of Pharmacy Program at Howard University. The HSSESA is a six-week residential summer enrichment science academy for rising 11th and 12th grade high school students. Twenty (20) High School students who demonstrate an interest in the sciences, a career in pharmacy or other health professions will be selected. The COE HSSESA selection process is competitive. In addition to demonstrated leadership skills, students must also have a high aptitude for science/mathematics and technology. Preference will be given to students who reside in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. The COE HSSESA is a five day academic schedule that exposes students to the pre-requisite classes that are required for a major in pharmacy or other health professions. The curriculum focuses on science related material and includes classes in Biology, Chemistry, Medical Terminology, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Career Exposure in clinical settings. Students will be in classes Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:00 am to 4:30pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays in their Clinical Hospital Sites between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Weeknights include scheduled tutorials and on weekends mandatory workshops and community/cultural focused excursions.

Hosted in Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia since 1963, the National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp) is a residential science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) program designed to honor and challenge some of the nation’s rising leaders and provide them with opportunities to engage with STEAM professionals and participate in exciting outdoor activities. Typically, two delegates are selected to attend camp from each state and the District of Columbia. In partnership with the U.S. State Department, we also host international delegates. Past countries represented include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago. Housing, meals, transportation, and supplies are provided to participants at no cost.

Sustainable Chemistry & Renewable Energy is an intensive, hands-on, two-week program. Throughout the program, students will learn about how the core principles of chemistry are driving some of the most innovative approaches to renewable energy. The program will focus on: Alternative approaches to make common products without pollution, Essential contributors to climate change and its impact, Resilience and sustainability with replacement of plastics, Electrochemistry leading to better batteries and fuel cells. Students will split their time between lectures given by renowned faculty and guest speakers, and performing lab work and projects in various faculty labs. Students who complete the program will be offered a faculty letter of recommendation.

SSP is an immersion into experimental science, designed to challenge and inspire talented rising seniors from around the world. Working in teams of three, participants complete a research project from beginning to end: either in Astrophysics – near-earth asteroid imaging and orbit determination – or (new in 2017) Biochemistry – fungal enzyme inhibition and drug discovery. Each team acquires its own original data and performs its own analysis. Field trips and guest speakers round out an intense 39-day schedule. The experience changes their lives, and the benefits continue for life.

The Jump Start Program will invite 50 rising high school juniors and seniors to participate in a week-long summer science immersion program at the University of Maryland. The program was developed through a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and is now sponsored by the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, University of Maryland. Students considering a career in the sciences will have the opportunity to learn the tools of modern life sciences research and experience the excitement of discovery. In addition to carrying out laboratory investigations, students will participate in seminars and professional development workshops.

Food is something we all have some sort of a connection with. Whether you see it as a tool for artistic expression, or simply as fuel for your body, food is derived from the living world around us. This course will relate concepts from the biological sciences in an applicable context by using the food we eat to provide students with an understanding of molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, health and nutrition.
