Author Guidelines

Length:

Final manuscripts should be 3,000-5,000 words in length, excluding references.

Tone and approach:

Although this is an academic book for academic librarians, we hope it will also be readable & enjoyable, so we ask you to write with a minimum of jargon and to try to write with an academic approach but relatively natural language.

In thinking about your literature review, it's more important to us that the literature ground what you are saying, than that it be an exhaustive review.

If you are writing a case study, think of your case as a focal point that might inspire other librarians to develop similar projects. Try to communicate how and when what you did is generalizable to other contexts.

Chapters may use first person language, but please avoid second person.

Please strive to write inclusively. If you have questions about this, the Conscious Style Guide is a wide-ranging resource.

Formatting:

  • The final book will use Chicago style formatting, with endnotes and bibliography citation style. First draft feedback will not focus on the style, so initial drafts can use any citation style, but the second draft will need to be formatted in Chicago style.

  • Charts, graphs, and tables may be included as separate files or integrated into the text.

  • Illustrations are encouraged. Please note that it is your responsibility to establish or secure permissions for works created by others.

    • There is no limit to the number of illustrations you can include.

    • Images should be high resolution (over 300dpi).

  • Please include a separate document containing a short biography of each author (150 words maximum)

Licensing:

  • ACRL manages licensing, and will be in touch later in the process with author contracts. CC options will be available.
