The Chemistry Graduate Student Committee (CGSC) is a five-member peer-elected body of graduate students whose purpose it is to represent the chemistry graduate students in matters within the chemistry department. These five Representatives are further categorized into four Divisional Representatives responsible for representing their division (Analytical, Environmental & Atmospheric Chemistry; Materials Chemistry & Nanoscience; Organic Chemistry; Physical Chemistry) and one Representative at Large. However, there can be less than four Divisional Representatives and more than one Representative at Large.

The purpose of the CGSC is to:
generally facilitate communication between the graduate students and the faculty and staff members of the department;
work together with the faculty and staff of the department to mediate concerns and propose solutions to issues of the graduate students;
advocate for the graduate students in departmental decisions.
The CGSC is focused on a solutions-based approach to problems. It is not in the interest of the graduate students, staff or faculty of the department, to air grievances without the proposal of solutions. The CGSC aims to foster fruitful and respectful discussions that can arrive at reasonable conclusions.
The CGSC is not meant to be an organizer of community events, although it may advocate for such events.
The CGSC is meant to attend to the concerns of the graduate students as a whole, not of individual students. The Scholastic Committee of the department can be a first resource to treat grievances and problems of individual graduate students.
