Andrew Hogan
This summer, I was offered the opportunity to work alongside NOAA and its affiliates to immerse myself in the process of industrial software development leading itself by the principles of Agile. This blog is a documentation of my experiences, professional and personal, during my time with the program.
For my first week, I begin my onboarding process with my peer advisor and introduce myself to the team.
This week, I am assigned my first task. But sometimes things don't go as planned, especially not in the era of COVID-19.
I 'git good' with the UW Team's tools repo, and I complete my first scrum ticket for sprint 4.4, just in time to play "scrum poker" during this week's planning and retrospective meeting.
I peek at a peer's ongoing YAML parser project, and he guides me in utilizing Unix commands as we work together using Git Bash.
As a heat wave sweeps the country, I experience a hiccup working from home as I struggle through a network outage.
A program increment ends, and the Unified Workflow team prepares for the next PI 5, but we seem to have lost a few crewmates getting here.
A somewhat lighter week, I continue work on a Unix file handler and enjoy my time in the sandbox. I gather my thoughts and collect them as anecdotes for these two weeks I'm working on my ticket.
As my time with NOAA draws to a close for the summer, I provide a reflection of my overall experience with the program and offer my gratitude to the team.
Hi, my name is Andrew. I'm currently a computer science post-baccalaureate student with the University of Colorado, Boulder. My first degree is a BS in Genetics from the University of Georgia.
As a lifelong learner, I aspire to apply my knowledge to further medical or technological sciences. And maybe also to return to my inner kid and create video games.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my experiences.
