March 3, 2020 School Bond Request
In the spring of 2019, surveys asking for feedback about our schools and district were made available to CM parents, community members, staff and students. As a result of the feedback, a building planning committee was formed - with representation from parents, community members, students, staff and district leaders - to evaluate the needs of our school buildings in an effort to develop long and short term facility plans. Both the results from the surveys and work from this committee overwhelmingly indicated that attention was needed at our high and middle school buildings.
As a result of this work, at the November 21 board meeting, the recommendations formed by the building planning committee were presented to the school board. On this night the school board unanimously supported and approved a motion to move forward with a bond petition. If there are enough signatures collected on the bond petition, then formal action can take place at the December 18 board meeting, allowing for a vote to come to the public to support the plan on March 2, 2020.
The plan presented to the school board called for mostly renovations at the high/middle school building – including reuse of the 1931 gym and other areas in the building, with two small additions. The scope of the recommendation shared with the school board included:
· Renovating the 1931 gym into a new multipurpose space with theatre and stage upgrades
· Renovating spaces for new/updated kitchen area, special education classrooms, media center, AG and Food Science Lab and classroom areas (also included is a renovation of the Collins Elementary media center).
· High school classroom and HS/MS corridor upgrades
· Updating and renovating restrooms
· Reconfiguring the media center into a HS/MS and district shared office
· Adding a new secure and visible main entrance
· Adding new front parking and bus loop
· Adding a new weight room
· Addressing roof, HVAC and air circulation issues
The focus of the project will be to: 1) Provide a safe, secure and visible entrance area, 2) Improve school and community spaces such as weight room, multipurpose gym space and kitchen areas, 3) Improve the learning environment - air flow, sunlight, heating/cooling, aesthetics, and 4) Renovate existing spaces to increase new learning opportunities.
