Science Writing Fundamentals: Reporting Your Research Findings at Any Stage of Your Project
Mercury Fox, Program Director, Public Invention
Drea Renshaw, Founding Director, GreenLathe Science Collective
Academic research can be disrupted by unexpected setbacks for a variety of reasons: funding cuts, a change in a supervisor's research direction, a PI moving to a different institution, or experiments that simply don't yield the expected results. When this happens, researchers can navigate career hazards by knowing their options and possessing the skills that will keep them moving forward during periods of uncertainty.
This workshop is designed to help participants add tools to their resiliency toolbox by demonstrating how to write up results at any stage of their project, and how to frame those findings for a new sponsor, publication, and future employers.
The workshop will enable participants to:
Identify and claim their own contribution to the design, data collection, intellectual merit, and/or analysis of completed work
Understand their options for writing and publishing results with or without approval of a supervisor
Ask and discuss questions about building a resiliency toolbox
This workshop will offer guidance, resources, and instruction for postdocs who want to understand their research options and improve their writing skills. Participants are invited to bring an example that they would like to share and use for a practical lesson.
