Upstate Institute at Colgate University
The population of deer is overabundant in our area, with numbers often exceeding 40 deer km-2. Pervasive deer browsing damage is visible throughout the Village and Town of Hamilton and on Colgate's campus.
To diminish the impacts of the local deer population such as incidence of lyme disease and deer vehicle collisions, Colgate University & the Upstate Institute are continuing a deer culling program, first started in 2015 by the Village of Hamilton.
The hunting and culling process is managed by Dr. Catherine Cardelús, Director of the Upstate Institute, and Drew Andrews, Events Staff for Campus Safety, in collaboration with the Deer Management Working Group. Dr. Cardelús is managing the logistics, paperwork, and materials associated with the cull and Drew Andrews is managing the hunter/culler field schedules, field sites, bait, feeders, and related issues. Campus Safety is an excellent partner in this process. They are open 24 hours and they have information on all authorized hunters and cullers. Copies of all information related to the cull including sites, phone numbers, personnel, and permits are housed at Campus Safety.
Participants are restricted to a small group of individuals who are carefully vetted and who have committed to an explicit and detailed written code of conduct. Each culler is a licensed bowhunter with a multi-year record of harvesting does. Only those individuals who have already culled on Colgate parcels are allowed to hunt this year. Applicants have gone through a background check and have been approved by Campus Safety, and we have verified with the NYS DEC that they do not have any past hunting violations.
The Village of Hamilton ran a deer cull from 2015-2020. In 2021, Colgate took up the deer cull on their property in Hamilton, NY.
