The Colby Lady Eagles just can't be stopped this year. The Varsity has gotten 1st 4 out of 6 of their tournaments. The junior varsity is experiencing similar success by winning almost every single tournament. The JV went to Scott City twice recently and did very well there. The tournament on September 20th was technically hosted by Greeley County High School, but their cours are being refinished.
However, the weather has played a part in the JV team not getting to participate in all of their tournaments. The tournament in Hays on September 15th got rained out as did the Norton tournament on September 10th.
Colby has the GWAC tournament on October 3rd in Scott City. They will be playing in the 4A classification this year for tennis. Their Regional meet will be in McPherson on Friday October 7th and Saturday October 8th.
The tennis coaches and team would like to give a big shoutout to Hayden Bellamy and Ali Bartlett for their record. Hayden Bellamy is 25-1 right now and is just a junior. Ali Bartlett is having an amazing senior year being 17-2.
The cross country team has been busy of late. They had a meet at Norton, the team where each individual runner ran well. Sophomore Emilie Stramel finished 26th with a time of 23:51. Fellow sophomore Haydin Litsinberger finished 25th in the boys race. Derek Barraza was the 2nd runner for the team by finishing 31. Dalton Bell, Wyatt Davenport, Grant Stephens, and Caden Schriner finished 31st, 33rd, 38th, 39th, and 40th respectively.
The Colby cross country team took the trip to Oberlin to compete in their meet on a rare Tuesday meet. Stramel finished 15th with a time of 26:10. The boys followed suit with Litsinberger also finishing 15th. Their scoring finished out with Barazza finishing 19th, Davenport finishing 20th, and Stephens finishing 21st. Rounding out the Eagle finishers were Bell at 25th and Schriner at 29th.
The coaches are very proud of the teams placements and times. All the boys have shown enough improvement to run in the varsity race. The boys were 6th out of 19 teams at Norton and 3rd at Oberlin.

Varsity football traveled to Holyoke, Colorado to compete against the Dragons. After digging a hole for themselves in the first half by trailing 21-6 at the end of the first quarter and 40-14 at halftime, the Eagle footballers played even with the Dragons in the second half. That loss dropped the Eagles to 0-2 on the season.
The homecoming game was a different story for the CHS football team. They played Cimarron on September 16th and came away with a 40-9 victory over the Blue Jays. The Eagles played lights out with Zane Betz running the ball very well that game garnering over 150 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Hunter Vaughn played very well at the quarterback position by going 8-16 through the air with a touchdown. He also spread the ball around with four different receivers reeling in two catches a piece.
The three hour trip to Hugoton was not as successful for CHS. They fell to 1-3 on the season after a 47-6 loss on the road.
The junior varsity team defeated Cimarron on the road and then lost at Scott City. They defeated Hugoton’s JV by a score of 20-12 at home in a back and forth game. Neither team scored in the first quarter, but Colby took a 6-0 lead going into halftime on a Casen Caroll touchdown pass to Boston Tubbs. Hugoton answered with two touchdowns of their own, taking a 12-6 lead.
However, the Eagles scored two touchdowns at the end of the fourth quarter. After a long completion from Carroll to Simon Salcido to get the Eagles inside the red zone, Carrol scrambled on a broken play and scored with under a minute remaining, tying the game at 12. After Hugoton took possession, Boston Tubbs intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown, securing the win for CHS. Talon Wark added the two point conversion.

The monthly Great Western Athletic Conference meeting was held Wednesday September 21, 2022 in Scott City. The meeting was called to order and they approved the meeting agenda and last month’s minutes. They also approved the treasury reports for both the high school and middle school accounts.
Next, they discussed enrollment numbers in old business from the last meeting. Colby High School’s freshman through senior enrollment is 284 and their freshman through junior enrollment is 213, both of which is fifth out of seven league schools. Enrollment numbers for the remaining schools ninth grade through twelfth grade are as follows, Cimarron has 192 students. Goodland has 270 students, Scott City has 292 students, Holcomb has 301 students, Hugoton has 324 students, which bumped them up to a 4A school, and Ulysses has 436 students.
The very first new business item they discussed was how everything was going in reference to getting officials and line judges. Colby High School Athletic Director, Travis Betz, commented that he has had trouble getting workers for some events and the Colby High School is always looking for new volunteers.
The GWAC ADs also discussed the league standings for high school volleyball, which are based on how each school is ranked in the league.
Lastly there are new high school wrestling weight changes for Colby High School, the other league schools, and any other high school that is under the National Federation of High School’s umbrella. For the boys, this year’s weight classes still include 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, and 138. The change occurs beginning with the weights that are higher than 138. According to Betz, the new weight changes are as follows, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, and 285. That is a change from the previous year’s weights which were 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, and 285.
Last year, girls competed in the 101, 109, 115, 120, 126, 132, 138, 143 155. 170, 191, and 235 weight classes. The new weight classes for the girls are 100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 155, 170, 190, and 235.
According to CHS head wrestling coach, Matt Sims, the state of Pennsylvania “led the charge” to make these changes. Additionally, he said that the updated weight classes correspond more to the college wrestling weight classes, which could help with recruiting.
The next GWAC AD’s meeting will be held on October 12, 2022 at 10:00 am at Scott Community High School.
