The Colby High School football team has had some ups and downs to begin the season. The CHS varsity fell at Ulysses 46-28 on Saturday September 3rd. That game was a 1:00 pm start due to a shortage of officials in the Ulysses area.
Scoring for the Eagles was hard to come by, but their first score came from a pitch by Hunter Vaughn to Brayden Imhof to get them on the board after Ulysses had already scored twice.
However, the CHS junior varsity squad exacted some retribution against the Tigers by winning their game against Ulysses by a score 24-8 on Monday September 5th. Colby did not score until the second half, but after they managed three scores when they did break the seal of the end zone. The defense played well and only allowed one touchdown. Which was key for their win.
In week two, the varsity Eagles traveled to Holyoke, Colorado, but the result was similar. The Eagles gave up 21 points in the first quarter followed by 19 in the second and six in the third. The Eagle offense managed to score six in the first quarter, eight in the second and six again in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough.
After a win against the Ulysses Tigers the previous Monday, the JV team fell at Scott City on the following Monday by a score of 28-6

Volleyball keeps fighting through a tough opening schedule
by Reese Blatt
The first few weeks of the volleyball season have been grueling for the Lady Eagle volleyball team and that trend continued over the past couple of weeks. From the schedule to traveling to getting used to a new coach and a new system, the team is still working to hit their stride.
“I feel like we have been making some small improvements as we go from match to match. It took us a while to get used to each other in game situations and to find who meshes with who on the court,” commented first year head coach Shelby Mosier. “I think we are making our biggest improvements defensively as a team. They have really stepped up and bought into being defensive and working in our defensive system.”
On September 8th, the volleyball team went to Holcomb to face Holcomb and Hugoton in a triangular. The JV team beat Hugoton in two games 25-7 and 25-9. They then fell to Holcomb in three games by scores of 25-14, 21-25, and 9-15.
The varsity had the same results defeating Hugoton in two games, 25-12 and 25-7 then falling to Holcomb in three games.
On September 11th, the C team went to Dodge City. They feel to Scott City in three games 19-21, 21-19, and 13-15. They then lost to Hays in two games but rebounded to beat Dodge City in two games, Holcomb in three, and Liberal in two.
The varsity and JV were back in action at Atwood on September 13th. The varsity lost in four games and the JV won four games.
“The biggest thing we need to improve on is minimizing our errors, especially in key moments in the game,” Mosier said. “I think we are working on playing more together as a team and it is really helping us. They are improving but it is something we are still focusing on every game.”
