The Founding (1910): 

West China Union University (WCUU) was founded in 1910 as a unique "union venture" between four distinct mission boards: American Baptist, American Methodist, Canadian Methodist, and British Friends (Quakers). 

The "Academy of Five Countries" (1918): 

WCUU earned this nickname from the local people after the Episcopal Church joined the administration in 1918. 

Architectural Diplomacy: 

WCUU utilized a unique blend of Western interiors and Chinese exteriors to navigate anti-Christian sentiment and respect local culture.

The "Big Five" Era: 

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, WCUU hosted refugee universities like Yenching and Nanking to form the famous "Big Five" on the Huaxi Dam, becoming a critical center for education in the "Great Rear Area". 

Legacy: 

In 1952, the university was restructured; its medical schools became the foundation for today's West China Medical University (West China Medical Center), while its Arts and Science departments were merged into Sichuan University.
