Welcome to our class page! This website will help you determine if a website or source is credible. A credible site or source means that it provides information that is accurate, trustworthy, and reliable.
Why Judging Credibility Matters:
When reading something online, don't believe it-SIFT it first!
The SIFT Method includes four steps: Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, Trace the original context (Caulfield, 2019).
Check out this link from UNCP Library. It gives you detailed information on how to use the SIFT Method.
Pause Before You Click!
Before believing or sharing something online, it is important to pause and check to see if the source is trustworthy by using the SIFT Method (Clark University Libraries, n.d.).
Ask yourself:
Do I recognize this website?
Do I trust where this information is coming from?
What is the source known for?
Before deciding if it is true:
Check and see who created the source.
See if other reliable sites are covering the same story.
Trace the facts, quotes, or videos back to their original source.
Website Example: Using Figurative Language - Lesson - HelpTeaching.com
At first, the site looks like it has good information, but it has ads, no date or author, and there's no way to know if what it says is actually true. This would not be a reliable, credible website to use!
This website passes all the steps of the SIFT Method. It's trustworthy, the site is credible, and the information matches the content we are looking for. This would be a great resource for studying figurative language like similes, metaphors, idioms, personification, and more!
