The Georgia Department of Education provides a set of both formative and summative assessments that work together to provide insights to improve teaching and learning. Different stakeholders need different data – the right data – to meet their needs. For example, classroom teachers need detailed, real-time data to inform their work with students while leaders and policymakers need aggregated, high-level data to inform decisions about policy and instructional programs. This balanced approach to assessment and accountability provides data for a variety of stakeholders to inform decisions, whether at a policy, district, school, or classroom level to support the improvement of Georgia's education system.
On this page you can learn more about home schooling in Georgia. However, please note that the Georgia Department of Education has a very limited role with home school programs operating in the state. Pursuant to state law O.C.G.A. 20-2-690, the Georgia Department of Education only has authority to collect and maintain the Declaration of Intent to home school. The Declaration of Intent is the formal document that a family submits when beginning a home study program and then annually thereafter by September 1, for each year they continue the home school program.
Here you can electronically submit the annual declaration of intent to home school, download a declaration of intent to home school form that you may complete and return by fax or email. We also provide answers to commonly asked questions.
