Dr. (Mrs) Punam is presently serving in CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya Palampur in the Department of Horticulture & Agroforestry as Principal Scientist (Agroforestry) and OIC, AICRP on Agroforestry. She had been throughout a meritorious student and a Gold-Medalist from Botany department, Punjab University Chandigarh. A Jawaharlal Memorial Award winner, she has also been awarded Best Women Social Forestry Worker award in the year 1997. She has a working experience of more than 28 years in teaching, research and extension in the field of ecology/environmental sciences, agroforestry and organic agriculture.
She has guided 6 M.Sc. students and successfully completed 11 adhoc research & extension projects funded by various National & International agencies in the field of Agroforestry, Medicinal & Aromatic Plants and Organic Agriculture. She has published 112 extension papers/publications, 38 research papers in peer reviewed journals, 5 books and 14 booklets / technical bulletins etc. She has visited Malaysia and Australia in connection with Agroforestry conferences.
June, 2009 - Till date Principle Extension Specialist (Agroforestry) Dept. of Organic Agriculture, and Project Coordinator of AICRP (All India Coordinated Project on Agroforestry) from 2018 now placed in Dept. of Horticulture & Agroforestry, College of Agriculture, HP Agriculture Univ., Palampur, INDIA. Involved in extension and research in Organic Agriculture, Working on scientific validation of different organic practices especially Homa Farming. As training incharge, involved in capacity building programs of the department, imparting training to students, farmers, NGOs, scientists and officers on different aspects of Organic Farming
June, 2001 – June, 2009 Extension Specialist (Agroforestry) Dept. of Agroforestry and Environment, HP Agriculture Univ., Palampur, INDIA. Involved in extension, research and teaching in Agroforestry, execution of operational research programs sponsored by Ministry of Rural Department, GOI in villages of the state through peoples participation, teaching ‘Environmental Sciences & Agro-ecology’ and “Introduction to Environmental Sciences”to B.Sc. students and carrying out research on traditional agroforestry systems, tree leaf fodder dynamics and propagation technology of different agroforestry trees. Worked towards development of Model Organic Farm under NAE program of ICAR on Organic Farming in Hill Agriculture. Worked on Scientific validation of different organic practices, development of organic agro techniques of different crops, worked in HRD cell of Directorate of Extension Education, HP agriculture Univ. and organized trainings for different level of Functionaries of the state agric. Deptt., farmers etc.
June, 1992 –June, 2001 Assistant Extension Specialist (Agroforestry) Dept. of Agroforestry and environment, HP Agriculture Univ., Palampur, INDIA. Involved in extension, research and teaching in Agroforestry, execution of technology transfer programs of the department to the nearby villages, teaching ‘Environmental Sciences & Agro-ecology’ and other elective courses to B.Sc. students and carrying out research on traditional agroforestry systems, tree leaf fodder dynamics and propagation technology of different agroforestry trees.
August, 1991- June, 1992 Assistant Scientist (Social Forestry) Regional Research Station Kukumseri, HP Agriculture Univ., Palampur, India. Involved in developing demonstration units of different types of Agroforestry / Forestry systems in the dry temperate zone (Lahaul Spiti).
As project officer completed the project entitled, "Socio- Ecological restoration of Degraded Lands". This project was sponsored by - Society for Promotion of Wasteland Development, New Delhi, India (1986-1989). In this project a motivation model of social forestry was developed through tree clubs in schools, universities and villages. The concept of "plant trees and protect them" and "if you educate a woman you educate a family" was successfully implemented. This project was worth Rs. 0.4 million.
Co-Investigator of the project entitled "Technology Transfer Programme on Agroforestry".It was sponsored by National Mission on Wasteland Development Board, Govt. of India (1991-94). It aimed at developing research and demonstration plots in 25 ha in the village land in terms of Silvi-pasture, Silvi-Horticulture, Agri- Silviculture, Silvi-Horti-Agriculture & other systems and organizing the agroforestry farmers training programme and officers training programme in university and villages. This project was worth Rs.2.5 lakhs.
Principal Investigator of the project entitled "Technology Extension on Agroforestry". National Wasteland Development Board, Govt. of India (1994-97), sponsored it. It aimed at developing research and demonstration plots in 250 ha in the village land in terms of Silvi-pasture, Silvi-horticulture, Agri- silviculture, Silvi-horti-agriculture & other systems and also organizing farmers training programme and officers training programme in agroforestry at university and in villages of Kangra, Una and Chamba Dist. of Himachal Himalayas. This project was worth Rs. 14 lakhs.
Co-Principal Investigator of the project entitled “ Status of Traditional Agroforestry systems and their tree leaf fodder dynamics”. It was sponsored by Indian Council of Agriculture Research, New Delhi. It aimed at standardising the canopy management technique of the traditional fodder trees to get the optimum benefits in terms of most nutritive fodder. This project was worth Rs. 7 lakhs.
Principal Investigator of the project entitled “ Technical Bulletin on species of Silvi-horti-pasture and medicinal plants of different agro-ecological zones of India.” It was sponsored by National Wasteland Board , Govt. of India , New Delhi. This project was worth Rs. 99750/-
Principal Investigator of the project entitled “Standardisation of Propagation Technology of Albizia species”. It was sponsored by Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, Dehradun. It aimed at standardisation of propagation technology of Albizia species, which is an important agroforestry tree of the region. This project was worth Rs.7 lakhs.
Principal Investigator of the project entitled “Management of shrubs for hill agroforestry systems’. It was sponsored by Indian Council of Agriculture Research, New Delhi. It aimed at standardising the management techniques for the multipurpose shrubs for inclusion in various agroforestry systems depending upon the plant part to be harvested. This project was worth Rs. 9.79 lakhs.
Principal Investigator of an International Project entitled "Sustainable organic Medicinal Aromatic & Dye plants (MADP) farming for Small and Marginal farmers of Himachal Pradesh". It was sponsored by IDRC Canada (2004-2007). It aimed at developing medicinal and aromatic plants based agroforestry research and demonstration plots in the village land in two agro-climatic zones (II & III) of HP Himalayas, studying MaPs status in the project areas, Gender’s role in MAPs, post harvest handling and value addition of MAPs and also organizing training programs to the farmers in these aspects. This project was worth 1 lakh CAN $ millions.
Principal Investigator of the project entitled "Operational Research Pilot project on technology Extension on Agroforestry". It was sponsored by Ministry of Rural development, Govt. of India (2000-2007). It aimed at developing research and demonstration plots in 250 ha. in the village land in terms of Silvi-pasture, Silvi-Horticulture, Agri- Silviculture, Silvi-horti-agriculture & other systems and also organizing farmers training program and officers training program in agroforestry at university and in villages of two agro-climatic zones (II & III) of Himachal Himalayas. This project was worth Rs. 3.3 millions.
Project Coordinator of the project entitled “Lantana infested non-forest Wasteland Regeneration of Una and Kangra Distt of HP through Agroforestry interventions”. It was sponsored by Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India (2003-2008). It aimed at regeneration of non-forest wasteland or less productive lands infested by Lantana by firstly eradicating the weed and putting the land to alternative land use systems of Agroforestry which will ultimately sustain the land’s productivity both economically and ecologically. Organization of Agroforestry trainings for the farmers and the officers of the state was an important component of the project. The project was worth Rs. 2.187 crores and was for Una and Kangra districts of Himachal Pradesh.
