Gabe Coler

Originally from rural Massachusetts, Gabe grew up climbing and skiing through the beautiful hardwood forests of New England.  After moving to Washington to earn a BA in Economics from Whitman College, he relocated to Central Oregon in 2003 to work as a rock climbing guide at Smith Rock. “Once I saw how much snow we get in the Cascades, I was hooked on living here year round!  I can’t get enough of storm skiing through quiet old growth forests.”

Now Gabe lives in Bend with his family and their puppy Shea.  He works year-round as a mountain guide and instructor.  During the winter he teaches AIARE avalanche awareness courses and enjoys helping folks explore the OR backcountry.  He has completed an AIARE level III, and is a course leader/instructor on the Level I and II courses for Three Sisters Backcountry.  Additionally he is a professional member of the American Avalanche Association.

Matthew Callihan

My name is Matthew Callihan, and I am a meteorologist from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pendleton, Oregon, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) branch of the Department of Commerce. Before joining the NWS in August 2020, I was in broadcasting for 6 years in various areas of the country including Baton Rouge, LA, New Bern, NC, and Eugene, OR. However, my education initially steered me into teaching and research, as I spent a year as a research scientist at the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) located in Fort Collins, CO and also conducted research for the United States Forest Service (USFS) at the Fraser Experimental Forest in Fraser, CO. It was here that I worked on various projects including beetle kill evaluation, snow surveys, and a NASA remote sensing project calibrating and obtaining snow depth and snow-water-equivalent (SWE) measurements from the air and satellites. I have always enjoyed snow sports since I was a kid, and was fortunate enough to work at a local ski shop throughout my time in college. This has helped to blend my passion for snow sports to the compassion for keeping those that enjoy these sports safe.

Along the way, he gained a deep appreciation for the region's outdoor history, serving as chairman of the Mountaineers History and Library Committee, publishing the online Northwest Mountaineering Journal, and helping launch the Washington State Ski and Snowboard Museum in 2015.  Lowell's book, Written in the Snows: Across Time on Skis in the Pacific Northwest, received the National Outdoor Book Award for History in 2022.
