The SSR + Q digital tool was create to support students to access information from unseen text. It also supports students with locating keywords and using these keywords to summarise and synthesise text into their own words.
I first of all started this process with a small group of Year 9/10 students in my Literacy class. We used a paper copy of the text and highlighters then moved to using the Highlight Tool in Google Docs - extensions. I then did whole class learning tasks with articles taken mostly from KiwiKids News. These current events provided a variety of contexts, which the students like. For non-fiction articles the words added to the Highlight Library was proper nouns, keywords and speech marks. We then moved to learning about fiction texts. The learning tasks were uploaded to Hāpara.
