The Coalition of New York State School Board Members was founded during a challenging period in public education, born out of the need for support, collaboration, and shared knowledge as school boards navigated the complex COVID-19 mandates.
During that time, we recognized something important: superintendents, business officials, and nearly every other educational position had structured professional networks where they could meet, share ideas, and learn from one another. But Boards of Education often lacked that same type of support system. We saw a gap, and the Coalition was created to help fill it.
Our organization provides school board members with a place to collaborate, share best practices, and strengthen their understanding of effective governance. We are not in competition with other school board organizations. Instead, we offer something unique by focusing on the practical realities of serving as a board member — including hiring and evaluating superintendents, establishing district goals, navigating board relationships, understanding governance responsibilities, and addressing the day-to-day challenges boards face.
A core part of our mission is keeping school boards informed about legislation, regulations, and policies that impact public education. Whether it involves changes in state law, new educational mandates, or emerging issues affecting local districts, we work to ensure our members stay informed, prepared, and connected.
The Coalition is built on a strong belief in local control and the principle that school districts should reflect the values and priorities of their own communities. We are committed to empowering board members with the knowledge, resources, and network needed to make informed decisions on behalf of students, families, and taxpayers.
The Coalition of New York State School Board Members is formally organized as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization.
Above all, we strive to help board members become the most effective leaders they can be so that, together, we can positively shape the future of education across New York State.
