Stephen King is a fiction novelist who was born in Portland, Maine in 1947. King graduated from the University of Maine which he attended for 5 years. He is the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. He currently has a summer house in Maine, but spends most of his time in Florida with his wife, Tabitha King. Tabitha is also a novelist, and together they both contribute to the literary world. Along with their story writing, the Kings enjoy donating to charities in order to better the world. Their philanthropy is highly honored in the literary world because of their selflessness and pure hearts.
King did not have an easy life, so he had to fight for his success. He grew up poor in the town of Durham, Maine, where he was living with his single mother. His father abandoned his family while King was still a toddler, leaving the mother to support and take care of King and his brother by herself. In 1973, King was employed as a high school English teacher where he barely made enough to scrape by. He lived with Tabitha, whom he had married in 1971, in a small trailer where both of them had to work harsh hours in order to pay their bills. Despite these conditions, Tabitha’s perseverance was arguably the most influential in King’s literary journey, as she refused to let him take a higher-paying job because it meant less time for him to write. In fact, Tabitha was the one that encouraged King to finish the drafts of what would later become Carrie, one of the most successful books in King’s beginnings. Tabitha saw the abilities and talent King had, so she dug deep inside him and brought them to the surface. By 1980, King was the world’s bestselling author. King often states that he wouldn’t be where he is today if it wasn’t for Tabitha, and he will never let the world forget her influence.
King often takes real life events and implements them into his writing. He integrates these events in order to add a familiar, yet startling tone to his stories. One of his most impactful events happened in 1999, where King got hit by a van on route 5 while staying at his summer house in Maine. In summary, King was struck by a reckless driver around 4 in the morning and left the first responders questioning if he should even be alive. King was found with his spine twisted nearly ninety degrees to the right. Along with many other grotesque injuries, he was immediately rushed to an intensive care unit and treated back to health. The recovery process was long, and at times unbearingly painful physically and mentally, but King persevered and never lost his spirit. The thing that separates King from most people in this situation is the way he coped with it: he wrote a book about it. King later turned one of the most horrific, near-death experiences in his life into a short story called On Impact. King’s magnificent mind had no intention of sulking in his own sadness, but only how he could illustrate his story. King wanted to take something so negative in his life and turn it into something productive.
