Peter v Brett was born on February 8th 1973, to a family in New Rochelle, New York. Peter had an older brother and has a sister. From an early age Peter took an interest in fantasy such as the Hobbit and comics particularly Marvel X-men. He also enjoys fantasy games like D&D, some of these things contributed to his later writing or just his love of fantasy. Brett would go through school and eventually go to the University of New York, Buffalo. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Arts. After graduation Peter would spend over a decade as a pharmaceutical publisher, a job that paid the bills but was far from his dream. Peter had a long subway ride to and from work and it was on this subway and he wrote his first and part of his second book, which would eventually become his full time job and true bliss. He now lives in Brooklyn NY with his wife, daughter and 2 cats.
Many of the inspirations from Brett's books came from his childhood love of fantasy. Brett enjoyed all things fantasy including particular interest in the Hobbit, and X-men comic books. But one might say the aspect that drove Brett's creative mind toward fantasy would be his love for the D&D roleplaying tabletop game. In fact his most popular works, the demon cycle series, started off as a D&D campaign pitch. Even before the demon cycle series Brett was writing fantasy. Brett had been writing fantasy for as long as he could remember. The demon cycle series was just his first well known work that helped him achieve his dream of being a full time fantasy author. He also spent 8 months managing a comic book store which only helps to drive his interest toward fantasy and creativity. Now he has finally reached his dream of writing fantasy as a full time career.
There are days in every person's life that serve as markers, like a buoy in the river. As Peter said in his own personal blog on May 24, 2017 “There was your life before this day, and your life after this day” for Brett this day was May 24, 1997, memorial day, and his parents 28th anniversary. On this day his father went out for a bike ride like he always did, but hit a pothole and crashed. The crash flung him head first at the road, which ended up breaking a rib that pierced his father’s lung, sending his father to the hospital. They called the family to get them all to the hospital with Peter's dad, but Peter's older brother didn't respond. The day has already had a wrench in the plans and not gone great. Hours later police knock on the door of Peter v Brett's family house, at first Peter assumes his brother got himself into trouble like usual. Instead, the police inform them that his older brother was riding his motorcycle to meet them to celebrate their parents' anniversary when he was run over and killed by someone driving the wrong way out of a park entrance putting Peter's brother's wife, who was also on the motorcycle. In intensive care. Peter reluctantly volunteered to go with the police to identify his brother's body so his mother or sister didn't have too. Brett was understandably emotional and even lashed out at one of the nurses who tried to comfort him at one point.
After Brett's first book began being published internationally he became a full time writer where he settled into his dream profession with his wife Danielle and daughter Cassandra. He settled in Brooklyn, New York and adopted 2 cats named Jinx, and Max Powers. Peter is living his dream life with his dream job and a family.
