Orwell's setting is often dark and evokes a sense of depression. His works often take place in an environment of pain and suffering. He utilizes the setting to send the readers a message of how dreadful a tyrannical government can make the lives of the lowest class.

Orwell often utilizes dialogue to express the thoughts of various characters throughout his works. In Animal Farm, the narrator speaks from a third person perspective which makes the characters' speeches the key to revealing the characters' minds. From the tyrannical and power hungry pigs to the hard working horses, each animal on the farm has a different opinion on how well it is run. Although each animal is different from one another, unity is preached throughout the novel despite there being a humongous social divide.

Orwell's works often revolve around social and political ideologies. He often seeks to warn people of the dangers of a tyrannical government. His works Animal Farm and 1984 are excellent representations of communist governments growing too powerful. For instance, "Big Brother" causes those without power to be tormented in lives of poverty.

Now that Napoleon has obtained the acknowledgement of the humans, the Animal Farm began to change ever so greatly. Technology started to appear, and some of it wasn't even constructed. Squealer marched on his two legs with another message for the Animals.
"My comrades, a great blessing has been gifted to us. Thanks to your efforts and hard work, the Great Napoleon has convinced the humans to give us new equipment . Not only will it make our farm more efficient but we will demonstrate that we do not need humans to be successful. Rejoice, for it is an excellent day for us all." Squealer proclaimed.
"How shall we learn to use these new tools?" asked a hen.
"Don't fret comrades, our best and brightest pigs shall be directing the assembly and use of all the new equipment. We all shall do our share to make this farm a greater success." instructed Squealer.
Pigs, like soldiers, emerged from the main house. Squealer would assign each animal to a pig and project. Since pigs were the only ones who could read, they instructed the other animals on how to construct heavy machinery such as tractors, plows, and seeders. Each pig, equipped with a whip and dog, would be sure to punish any animal who disobeyed an order. After construction, the pigs would be the ones to operate the equipment while the other animals continued to perform tasks of labor. Napoleon was rarely ever seen. He would reside in the main house for vast periods of time whilst the other animals would occasionally rest in the barn and stables. However, there was always an occasion, perhaps once a month or two, when Napoleon could be seen collecting paper from a man. It was never the same man, and Napoleon would always escort him around the farm. But it did begin to occur more frequently over time. This caused some unrest among the animals, but Squealer would often assemble the sheep.
"Four legs good. Two legs better!" sang the sheep.
After a year or so of pain, bloodshed, and industrial change on the farm, most of the animals had completely forgotten what it had felt like to be free. None of Snowball's ideals for a free and equal farm were ever mentioned. In fact, Moses had flown back to the Animal Farm to divulge news about life outside of the Animal Farm.
"Moses, you've returned? Where have you been all this time?" questioned Clover.
"I've been traveling around, and visiting other farms." he replied.
"I wish I could leave this place like you, Moses. This place has been nothing but a constant reminder of how Napoleon took Boxer away. Since Boxer is no longer here to perform his heavy labor duties, I am now ordered to perform most of them. Every day my mind and body are filled with so much pain. Have you brought any news from outside?" inclined Clover.
"I have. It appears that the ways of the Animal Farm are spreading. Many of the farms I had visited were structured just as this place is. The humans are still in charge of the farms, but their punishments have become more cruel and violent." Moses stated.
Now Benjamin who had been listening to Moses began to piece the information together.
"Those men that we see escorted on the farm come here to learn about how Napoleon runs this farm. They must pay him for the tour." Benjamin deduced.
After becoming the Animal Farm, Napoleon has now spread suffering across many farms where the animals are now treated more unjustly than before.

I described the bloodshed and pain on the farm to illustrate an environment where the government has caused suffering for the working class. I used the description of the pigs with whips and dogs to provide a sample of the gruesome imagery that Orwell will use to drive his point.

I utilized Napoleon and Squealer to represent the pigs ideals, and I also included Snowball and Clover to oppose the pigs ideals. Squealer is Napoleon's right hand man. Squealer often utilizes speeches and announcements to influence the working class. He was the best speaker on the farm, so his words were often even more powerful than Napoleon's which is why he was used for deceiving the animals. While Napoleon was in rule of the farm, Clover was one of the few characters who recognized how terrible and cruel that he was. Snowball was a pig who represented hope and freedom, but he was exiled by Napoleon who is a dictator that only wants what's best for himself. These characters represent core political divides in government.

I expressed how Napoleon is using the animals to make a profit for himself. Orwell utilizes themes such as these to represent his criticisms of authoritarian governments. He also focuses on the suffering of the lower classes which is why I mentioned the oppression that the working animals were forced to endure.
