Early Life
Stephen Edwin King, dubbed the “King of Horror”, was born in Portland, Maine on September 21, 1947 to parents Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. However, his childhood took a difficult turn when was only 2, his father unexpectedly left the family with no explanation. This event left a lasting impact on King and forced his mother to raise him and his older brother, David, alone. Despite financial struggles and a challenging home life, King found solace in reading and writing from a young age. King developed a fascination with horror, explaining that he “just wanted to be scared” (wikipedia.com). This interest grew as he devoured every horror book he could find, seeing inspiration in dark and thrilling tales. One book in particular, The Lord of the Flies, deeply resonated with him and sparked his desire to write impactful stories of his own. In his early years, King began writing comics for the magazine company “Dave’s Rags”, selling issues to his friends, which he and his brother created. Not soon later, he began attending the University of Maine at Orono, where he continued to write, contributing to the school newspaper. It was there he met his wife, Tabitha Spruce. Who would become a constant source of support throughout his life. During college, he also participated in writing workshops and held various jobs, including working in industrial laundry and teaching high school English to support himself with continuing to pursue his dream of becoming a published author.
Career
After teaching for only 2 years, King finally gave into his writing career for good. His first novel to debut was Carrie. The inspiration for this novel came from his workings as a janitor. He took two completely separate ideas of adolescent cruelty and telekinesis and combined them to make the infamous novel. Originally, King threw away the first pages of his first draft in the trash, but his wife Tabitha found the crumpled up pages and was intrigued. She begged him to continue writing to find out the ends of the story, and from then on, he became a hit novelist. King is known for his reputation as a master of horror, suspense, and psychological thrillers. Some of his early works, including Salem’s Lot, The Shining, and Pet Sematary helped define the modern horror genre, helped define the modern horror genre, blending supernatural elements with emotional realism. Over time, King explored other genres beyond horror, such as fantasy, science fiction, drama, and crime through works. He has published more than 60 novels and over 20 short stories, which have been adapted into films, TV shows, and miniseries. To be exact, he has been given 107 different awards. Some of the more major ones include a National Medal of Arts, National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, Bram Stoker Awards, Hugo Award, O. Henry Award, etc. King's consistent productivity, creativity, and ability to connect with readers have made him not only a master of horror but also a literary icon whose work continues to shape modern fiction across generations.
