FRQ: It has often been said that what we value can be determined only by what we sacrifice. Consider how this statement applies to a character from a novel or play.
Select a character that has deliberately sacrificed, surrendered, or forfeited something in a way that highlights that character’s values. Then write a well-organized essay in which you analyze how the particular sacrifice illuminates the character’s values and provides a deeper understanding of the meaning of the work as a whole.
In Kristin Hannah’s novel, The Nightingale, Julian Rossignol and Vianne make sacrificial choices of risking their lives to keep their family member, Isabelle, safe, showing that they both value family loyalty, ultimately illustrating individuals can make sacrifices for their family when they value loyalty and safety.
First, Julian Rossignal, Isabelle’s father, chose to sacrifice his moral happiness when letting Isabelle stay with him, to keep her safe. For example, Isabelle, desperate for somewhere to stay, went to her father for temporary shelter during the war. Julian being a previous war veteran is better living alone and does not want his daughter to live with him, but ultimately makes the choice to let her stay temporarily. Because Juilan let his daughter stay with him, despite his unwillingness to, he is making a sacrifice to his own happiness and well-being. Consequently, Julian’s sacrificial choices revealed his love and loyalty to his daughter by providing her opportunity. Therefore, individuals can make sacrifices for their loved ones revealing what they truly value, loyalty. To continue this example, Julian Rossignol also sacrificed his own life to keep his family safe, specifically Isabelle. For example, Isabelle is stuck in a situation that puts her life on the line when questioned with a wanted identity she was hiding behind. Julian recognizes the situation and realizes the danger his daughter is in if he doesn’t take action, so he claims the wanted identity to keep her safe. Because Julian claimed the wanted identity to keep his daughter safe, he sacrificed the risk of losing his life, which ultimately happened. Consequently, the sacrifices of death reveal that Julian values loyalty and love towards his daughter. Therefore, like Julian, many people when their personal beliefs value loyalty, will make sacrifices to keep their loved ones safe.
Not only did Julian Rossignol make sacrifices to keep Isabelle safe, but Vianne also made sacrifices to provide the opportunity of safety to her sister. Vianne also helps her sister when Isabelle and the pilot she was with were titled wanted in war, by letting them hideout within her property. For example, Isabelle was working to help shot down fighter pilots get to safety, and brought one back to her sister’s house in search of safety from Nazi’s in war. Because Vianne allowed Isabelle to hide within her property, she was sacrificing her safety and could face serious consequences for housing the wanted. Consequently, the safety at risk shown reveals that Vianne values family and loyalty doing anything for them. Therefore, people will risk their safety if it is to the loyalty of their family. Further, Vianne also helps her sister when Isabelle and the pilot she was with were titled wanted in war, by murdering the person in charge of the search. For example, the Nazi staying with Vianne for housing was coincidentally head of finding the shot down fighter pilot that Isabelle had hid with her. Vianne was super threatened by his presence because of this, so she killed him. Because Vianne murder a man for the safety of her sister and a stranger, she is clearly very loyal. Consequently, her loyalty towards her sister by killing a man, not only put herself in greater danger for a crime, but the guilt of moral wrongdoings. Therefore, individuals are willing to risk their own personal safety and make sacrificial choices for the loyalty to their family.
Overall, sacrifice reveals values of family loyalty as illustrated by the characters, Julian Rossignal and Vianne, when they sacrifice their safety for their family member, Isabelle. The sacrifices made, whether that was committing morally wrong crimes or surrendering their own life, show a deep level of love and loyalty to family. This connection of sacrifice and loyalty ultimately shows people are willing to sacrifice to any extent when it is for family, showing how much they care, love, and want them safe
Many works of literature contain a character who intentionally deceives others. The character’s dishonesty may be intended either to help or to hurt. Such a character, for example, may choose to mislead others for personal safety, to spare someone’s feelings, or to carry out a crime.
Choose a novel or play in which a character deceives others. Then, in a well-written essay, analyze the motives for that character’s deception and discuss how the deception contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole.
In the Kristin Hannah's novel Home Again, judgement from the main character, Madeline, reveals complexity in order to convey, her daughter's longing to be loved and her goal to feel seen by her mother, and Madeline's ex-lover, Angel Demarco's dream to have a loving family and goal to have true connection with others, ultimately illustrating judgment is needed in order to reveal true prosperity and happiness.
To begin, the main character Madeline uses judgement toward her daughter by ignoring her throughout her youth, emphasizing that lack of love and attention causes the longing for love and the want to be cared for and seen. For example, Madeline's daughter changes her style by dying her hair and cutting it short. Because the daughter changes her style all of a sudden, it shows that the daughter is longing for attention. Consequently, the daughter switching up her actions causes the mother to react to the daughter, creating automatic judgement of disappointment and anger which creates complexity due to the daughter striving for love. Therefore, the judgment shows complexity because of the juxtaposing emotions of disappointment or neglect and love or affection causing the daughter to have a longing for love. To continue, the daughter wants to feel seen by her mother, so she lashes out when talking to her mother as a consequence. For example, Madeline threw a surprise birthday celebration for her daughter in an attempt to regain connection and trust within their relationship, but the daughter rejected the last-minute thought and manipulation of fake affection through gifts. Because the daughter rejected her mother's actions, there is a display of rebellion in an attempt to make a point and be seen by her mother. Consequently, the act of rebellion creates complexity of judgement by her mother because the daughter wants to ultimately be cared for, but the facade of affection ruins the authentic connection of love in the relationship between the daughter and her mother. Therefore, judgement can reveal the complexity of love and goals from opposing emotions and actions.
Not only does the main character, Madeline, use judgement to reveal the goals of her daughter, but also to reveal her ex-lover's dreams and goal as well. Furthermore, Madeline judges Angel DeMarco, her ex-lover, in attempt to reveal his goals and dreams by being blunt and unaffectionate. For example, Angel DeMarco had a lack of love growing up in his own family, so he longed to have it in his own family someday, even if his actions didn't outwardly display that. Madeline recognized his childhood neglect and judged him for his emotions while validating him. Because Angel DeMarco longed for a family, the lack of love reveals his sense of commitment to not dispalying true emotion. Consequently, Angel DeMarco, unable to display emotions because of Madeline's judgement, shows complexity revealing juxtaposing emotions towards his dreams and goals of love and emotionless. Therefore, judgement creates complexity of opposing emptions reveling the true dream of longing for a family. Furthermore, Angel DeMarco strived to have connection with other. For example, he made accomplished a goal to be famous and spoke among many individuals. Because he ultimately had a goal of creating true connection with others, he became famous but was judged by Madeline because of it. Consequently, the judgment from Madeline revealed his need for connection because there was an absence of love and connection in his youth. Therefore, the absence of love and the longing for true connection can be shown as opposing complex actions because of the judgment from others revealing that.
To conclude, judgment is needed in order to reveal true prosperity and happiness. Because Madeline judged her daughter and her ex-lover, the mixed and opposing emotions brought complexity to their dreams and goals. The true value and recognition of daughter's and ex-lover's dreams and goals are revealed because Madeline was judging them to dive deeper into their own emotions and self-reflect on what exactly they are trying to accomplish.
