AVID is a college prep elective that prepares students for four-year universities. The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study skills, and college/career/motivational activities. AVID students have access to college tutors in class, college and university campus visits, and representatives from various colleges and universities. Students must commit to AVID guidelines as well as maintain good attendance, citizenship and have a GPA of 2.5 or above.

“Leadership” ASB Associated Student Body students are responsible for creating and maintaining school spirit, along with providing a fun environment for all students. ASB will host lunch time activities, spirit weeks, talent shows, school fundraisers, assemblies, recycling, and other school related programs and activities.
Yearbook was designed to expose students to various elements of journalism. Students will be tasked with taking digital photos, conducting interviews, managing clerical operations, advertising, composing, designing, and editing all elements of text, graphic art, and digital photography layouts as it relates to publishing our printed news letters as well as the annual yearbook.

HOSA – Future Health Professionals aka “JUMP LEADERSHIP” -Students will be affiliated members of HOSA-Future Health Professionals and will focus on the core values of learning, leadership, service, and innovation while preparing for our state and local medical competitions. Develop leadership and technical skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness, competitions and class/community projects.
Internet and Core Computer Concepts - This course will build a foundation of technical literacy. Students will become familiar with current technologies including computer fundamentals, key applications, and living in an online world. Students have the opportunity to earn an IC3 certificate which can be used on applications, resumes, and help get a job in the future. An IC3 certificate from this course will also prepare students to enter high school and complete the Microsoft Office Specialist program.
High School Spanish 1 - (8th Graders Only) This is a high school level course, which is accepted as meeting the Foreign Language “A-G” Requirement needed to attend a university. In order to be accepted into this course, the applicant needs to have a “B” or better grade average and outstanding citizenship marks. It is taught using Comprehensible Input. We will be using storytelling, speaking, gestures, and readings to learn Spanish. Extensive participation is mandatory.
This is a beginning Spanish course therefore; no Heritage Spanish-Speakers (those who speak Spanish in the home) or Dual-Immersion students (Spanish-English) will be accepted. Roosevelt offers a specific course for you that is more advanced.
*It is NOT necessary to have been in Intro to Spanish in order to be in HS Spanish 1.
Choir - The Beginning Choir is open to all River Heights students who are interested in singing and having a lot of fun throughout the year. We will perform in concerts with our other choirs and end the school year with a performance at a theme park.
Intermediate Band - This course is for students who have had some band experience in elementary or private lessons. Students continue practicing fundamentals of music reading, tone quality, and technique (scales and articulation).
Advanced Band - This course requires prior experience and teacher approval.
Jazz Band - This course requires prior experience, teacher approval, and enrollment in either intermediate or advanced band. For more information please email Mr. Hartling @ jhartling.cnusd.k12.ca.us.

Video Production - This class introduces students to the fundamentals of film and video production. Students engage in hands-on experiences as they learn the basics of filmmaking. Students participate in every aspect of video production, from editing to directing on-screen talent, as they develop skills in: planning, organization, script writing, interpersonal communication, team building, and media literacy.
Students practice shooting videos, doing sound recordings, sound engineering, and editing. They work individually, with partners, and in collaborative groups, producing videos in various forms such as: narrative/dramatic, informational/documentary, promotional/persuasive, and creative/music video.
***Year Long Class-Application Required
