If you are worried about how you can support a friend at CNU, you might consider making an appointment for yourself to speak with a counselor at CNU's Office of Counseling Services. The Office of Counseling Services is a free and confidential resource for students located in the Freeman Center. They can help you come up with a plan for how you can support your friend. The counseling center also can reach out to your friend to ask if they would like to meet. The counseling center would not disclose to your friend that you were the person who expressed concern.
They are available for appointments during business hours M-F. It's easy to set up an appointment to meet with a counselor-- just call 757-594-7047 or even walk in. You can learn more about the Office of Counseling Services here.
If your friend lives on campus, another great resource would be the Hall Director in your friend's building. You can simply email or call the Hall Director and share your concern, and they will ask the RA for the hall to reach out to your friend to check in and assess what needs they may have. Sometimes just knowing someone is thinking of them and taking the time to check in with them can be a comfort, as well as a motivator to seek further help. The contact information for the Hall Director of each residence hall is listed here.
Another option is to share your concern with the Dean of Students Office. This office has the ability to essentially serve as an “operator,” meaning they can efficiently connect your friend with resources across different departments they may not have been aware of as relevant to what they are struggling with, and provide support along the way. You can email dosa@cnu.edu, call 757-594-7160, or drop in--their office is located in DSU suite 3127-- to share your concerns and seek support for your friend.
