Welcome parents, we're glad you found this site! We know it can be challenging knowing exactly who to contact and the full extent of what resources are available at CNU to support your Captain, and to support you in supporting them. We encourage you to browse the site as if you were a student, clicking on the buttons that best represent the concern you have for your student. However, the below information is just for you, to help you understand the structures in place here at CNU:
The academic and student affairs sides of the university don’t always talk unless a need is effectively communicated. This means a student may not be receiving all services they could potentially benefit from unless relevant offices know they have this need. While this is understandably frustrating, it is common outside of higher education as well: organizational charts rarely have horizontal lines of communication at all levels.
Below is a simplified version of CNU's organizational chart, to help you understand the established chain of communication at the university. You can also click here to see CNU's official organizational chart.
Thankfully, there are roles at the university that essentially serve as “operators.” These staff have relationships across the organizational chart. When a need arises and is communicated to these “operators,” they can efficiently share resources and connect different departments that do not typically talk, as well as connect students and parents to departments they may not have been aware of as relevant resources for their concern.
Here are key “operators” who can help you ensure your student is getting connected with all relevant sources of support:
Currently, the Associate Dean of Students is the best contact point for ensuring students' immediate needs are being addressed across all areas of wellness and officially communicated to all relevant parties across the university (with student permission). The Associate Dean of Students can be reached at 757-594-7160.
The Center for Academic Success is the best contact point for connecting students with strategies and resources for academics and stress management. The Center for Academic Success can be reached at 757-594-7684.
