This study abroad will explore the important political, social, and cultural transformations that shaped both the French and American Revolutions. Through lectures, discussions, and site visits to historical and modern cities such as Normandie, Marseille, Bordeaux, and Paris, students will examine the key events, ideas, and historical figures that drove these two revolutions, comparing their causes, outcomes, and legacies—and the connections between leaders on both sides of the Atlantic World. Students will gain a deeper understanding of how these two revolutions were influenced by shared Enlightenment ideals, and how ideas of liberty, equality, and fraternity shaped revolutionary thought. Students will also learn about the differences between the development of republicanism in the United States and the French pursuit of radical social reform, which ultimately led to cycles of instability in France in the nineteenth century.
