Joshua is originally from Tacoma, Washington. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry in 2004 from the University of Puget Sound. His undergraduate research, under the direction of Steven Neshyba, involved examining the optical thickness of Arctic clouds and mathematical models of cloud emissivity. In addition to his time in the classroom and lab, Joshua also swam on the Puget Sound's NCAA DIII swim team. Following graduation, Joshua worked as a research technician for Joel Thornton within the University of Washington Department of Atmospheric Sciences, focusing on model aerosol particle synthesis and organic coating methods. In 2005 Joshua began his graduate work at University of Washington in the Department of Chemistry. His graduate research, with Phil Reid, examined the solvent-dependent photochemistry of chlorine dioxide and nitrosyl chloride using ultrafast UV-vis and IR spectroscopy. Joshua obtained his PhD in 2011. In 2012 he joined the faculty at Christopher Newport University in the Department of Molecular Biology & Chemistry. His research focuses using spectroscopic techniques to examine the fundamental relationships between local environment and chemical reaction outcomes.
